Japanese
Emperor Hirohito
(70) is
welcomed by President Nixon in
Anchorage, Alaska. It is the first time
in history that a Japanese head of
state has ever set foot on foreign soil.
The emperor thanked Nixon for
traveling to Alaska, saying the trip
was “a manifestation of your very
special goodwill and interest for the
Japanese people and ourselves.”
Hirohito is on his way to Europe for a
seven-nation, 18-day tour.
In a salute to former first lady Mamie
Eisenhower who turns 75 this week, President Nixon plays “Happy Birthday” on
the piano. Jerry Lee Lewis he isn’t - but he did praise her, telling the celebrity
crowd how she stood by her husband during tough times. Also attending, Ethel
Merman, Red Skelton, Ray Bolger and Lawrence Welk.
In the small town of Dequeen, Arkansas, a Mrs Ratliff (37) is accidentally shot in
the chest dead - by her dog. Police say she placed a 410-gauge shotgun
between her and her dog in the family pickup truck. The stupid dog stepped on
the trigger, discharging a blast into her chest.
In sports - After 71 years, baseball’s
Washington
Senators
play their last game in front of 14,500. The
game, played at RFK stadium, was forfeited in the ninth
inning with the Senators ahead of the Yankees 7-5.
Officials couldn’t control the crowd who took to the field
with one more Yankee out to go in the ninth ... The San
Francisco Giants win the National League Western
division championship, beating the Padres 5-1.
$400 million Walt Disney
World opens in Orlando. All but two of the park’s
35 major attractions are ready for visitors. General
admission is $3.50 for adults, $2.50 for kids 12-17
and a buck for children 3-11. Once you get in the
park, rides will cost between 10 and 90 cents each,
but you can get a 17-ticket book - $4.75 for adults,
$4.25 and $3.75 for juniors and children. Disney

World’s two resort hotels won’t be ready until November.
Doing something abit different for viewer pledges - WNET-
TV (PBS) Channel 13 in the New York area runs 24 hours
of the British series “The Forsyth Saga” - in order. Channel
13 says it made sense since a lot of viewers missed key
episodes. The series covers three generations of the
Forsyte family. The program was extremely popular when it
first aired in Europe.
Recently released by the Detroit Lions - Alex
Karras says he isn’t bitter about the game,
even though he could be “I’ve been kicked around pretty good.
I’ve been left with scars...”I’m a happy man. I’m getting ready to
make a pilot film for a TV comedy series. I’m talking about some
movies. and for the first time in my life, I don’t wake up Monday
morning full of aches and pains.”
National Airlines launches its new campaign “Come Fly Me.” The campaign will
be launched in print, radio and TV. A typical print ad goes like this - a picture of a
pretty stewardess - “I’m Cheryl - Fly Me.” ... “You think I’m just another pretty
face? I’m not. I’m a fresh attitude towards air travel. A bright look on the outside,
a personal way of thinking on the inside ... You can call us by our first name -
National.” Each of the carrier’s 61 jets will bear a 4 by 10 foot decal with the
name of a girl over a heart.

While performing in Germany, gospel singer Mahalia Jackson (59) is taken
seriously ill with a circulatory ailment. She is being treated at a U.S. Army
hospital in Munich.
