First debate - President Bush and John Kerry head into a
debate with President Bush with a 5 percentage-point lead.
Bush said Kerry was unfit to help Iraq. Kerry said the war on
terror should target Al Qaeda.
Federal U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero in New York,
curtails the government’s power in terrorism investigations
under the patriot Act, saying a widely used too to obtain
Internet and other electronic records from communications firms violates the
Constitution by permitting “coercive searches” without any judicial review.
Floridians weather their fourth hurricane in six months as Jeanne hits with 120-
mph winds and pounding rain. At least six are dead.

Music news - Are they back? - The Dixie Chicks, out
of sight for the past year or so, join a coalition of
music stars including Bruce Springsteen and Pearl
Jam, who will perform concerts under the Vote for
Change banner in key battleground states to raise
money for causes united against Bush’s reelection.
It’s been a while for the chicks. They were bruised
after member Natalie Maines disparaged President
Bush from a concert stage in London. That was
March 2003. Country radio stations dropped the
group in droves and they were dissed, for the most
part, by the conservative country audience.
Hip Hop now part of culture? - Dreamworks’ animated
“Shark Tales” opens this week. It features the voices of
rappers Ludacris, Missy Elliott , Will Smith and Eminem.
One historian says, “This is just further proof that 25
years after ‘Rapper’s Delight’ by the Sugar Hill gang, that
hip-hop culture has become American culture.” But it
was Will Smith who got the other rappers involved with
this project.
The tour of rapper Jay-Z and R. Kelly kicks off in
Chicago. Kelly’s new two-CD set “Happy People/U
saved Me,” recently debuted at #2 on Billboard. Kelly is awaiting trial from
charges of child pornography.
Don’t miss Brian Wilson and his “Smile” tour. “Smile” was an abandoned album
by Wilson back in 1966.

News talk KPRC in Houston drops Dan Rather’s daily CBS feature - in reaction
to his “60 Minutes” report questioning president Bush’s National Guard service
several weeks. Ago.
