barrels of oil from the strategic Petroleum Reserve over the next month to assure
an ample supply and decent prices for home heating oil.
The United States and its European allies call on Milosevic to concede defeat in
Yugoslavia’s presidential election.
The FDA gives final approval to the abortion pill RU-486, thus allowing more
doctors to provide abortion “service.”
Israeli security forces battle thousands of enraged Palestinians at Temple Mount
in the walled Old City in Jerusalem. At least four are dead.

draws more than 8,000 paying
supporters at a Seattle rally. Said Nader
- “This is a great turnout. This crowd is
bigger than my whole hometown in
Connecticut. We are attracting more
people than Bush and Gore. They have
to pay people to come out and seem
them.” It’s Nader’s third “super” rally and
more are planned in October for Boston
and Chicago.
Al Gore, appearing in front of University of Michigan students for
an MTV program - tells the MTV audience, “Just lump it in your
arms and take it all out like this.” He was asked about things such
as Napster (“terrific,” but even with such innovative downloading
software, the rights of artists must be protected).

As a part of its Bluetooth product line - Motorola introduces the
Timeport 270 phone - the first Bluetooth-capable mobile phone.
Bluetooth is a new short-distance wireless technology that
eliminates the need for cables between electronic devices such as
mobile phones, PC’s, headsets, printers and hand-held computers.
The new phones would allow consumers to access the Internet on

their portable computers as much as 30 feet way from their mobile phones
without having to find a physical data connection.
Billionaire Paul Allen - the Microsoft co-founder - steps down from the board of
the company. Allen and Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975. Allen left
Microsoft in 1983 and has been involved in his own investments.
Apple Computer’s stock loses 50% of its value after the computer maker warned
of a sharp shortfall in fiscal fourth quarter earnings.
Microsoft says it will begin selling a highspeed online service at RadioShack
stores. Look for MSN HighSpeed service for about $39.95 a month for a phone-
line connection and $59.95 for a satellite link.
