Vice President George Bush and
Michael Dukakis face off in a nationally
televised debate. Some of the issues
included in the debate, televised from
Wake Forest University, included
Dukakis’ firing-off Reagan’s involvement
with the Iran-Contra affair and Dukakis
linking Bush with the administration’s
negotiations with Panamanian
strongman Noreiega. Bush countered
by portraying Dukakis as an ultra-liberal
who would lead the nation to the far left.
In an ABC poll of 639 voters who watched the debate - 44% thought Dukakis
won with 36% choosing George Bush and 20% undecided.
The Shuttle Discovery blasts off into orbit,
returning the U.S. into space for the first time in
2 1/2 years. The redesign of the booster
rockets kept the other three shuttles off the
ground since the Challenger disaster. Getting
past the ill-fated 73-second mark seemed to be
the high point for most viewers.
The house passes a major AIDS policy bill that
would expand testing and counseling, protect
the confidentiality of test results and speed
research into the fatal disease.
At the Seoul
Olympics -
Canadian Ben Johnson , who won the
Olympic 100 meters gold medal at 9.79
seconds is tested positive for steroids and is
disqualified. Johnson flew back to Canada in
disgrace. Canadian officials announce that
Johnson is banned from its teams for life. By
default, American Carl Lewis gets the gold
medal. Lewis, who ran to Johnson at 9.92
seconds. Johnson’s world-record time was
erased from the records.

Three South Korean boxing officials and two assistants are thrown out of their
own Olympics for attacking a New Zealand referee. The referee, Keith Walker,
assessed two possibly pivotal penalty points against Korean bantamweight Byun
Jong-il. After the decision, the 5 stormed onto the ring - punching and kicking
referee Walker. The brawl was televised completely by NBC.
NBC apologizes for a T-shirt design making fun of the Korean boxing brawl.
Production members of the network ordered 50 T-shirts with the NBC peacock
logo and the words “We’re Boxing, We’re Bad” on the front. The back was to
feature the South Korean flag and two boxers over the slogan “Chaos Tour ‘88,
XXIVth Olympiad.” A shop owner refused the order and chided NBC staffers for
trying to make South Korea appear responsible for the incident.
Passing - Billy Carter (51) of pancreatic
cancer. Probably the best known “first-
brother” in U.S. history.
In Moscow, Soviet labor camp inmates,
attempting to distill alcohol by heating paint
instead start a fire - killing 24 men.
Soul Brother #1 -James Brown is arrested
after he brandished a pistol in a roomful of
people and led police on a chase. Brown was
stopped when police shot-out three of his four
tires. He was arrested for assault, carrying a
pistol without a license, carrying a deadly weapon
at a public gathering and seven misdemeanor
charges.
Yoko Ono, receives John Lennon’s star on the
Hollywood walk of fame, near the Capitol Records
building...Paul Harvey (70) celebrates is 50th
anniversary in radio.
