Week of September 23, 1959
Premier Khrushchev tells Iowans how to grow better corn. He delivered his
lecture on superior Soviet corn planting methods as he inspected cornfields of
Stephen Garst, son of his host.
Nikita Khrushchev returns to Washington, after a cross-country tour.
Teamster president James R. Hoffa bowing to a provision of the new labor
reform law orders his union to oust ex-convict officials barred from holding office
under the new statue.
President Eisenhower appears to be standing
firm on his repeated public insistence that
Premier Khrushchev gives clear recognition to
the western allies rights in Berlin.
President Eisenhower and Premier Khrushchev
agree to keep on talking about their differences,
but settle on nothing except to postpone the
President’s return visit to Moscow until next
spring.
“Until We Meet Again” said Premier Khrushchev before he boarded his plane to
Moscow.
Arriving in Moscow, Premier Khrushchev says his American trip was very
successful. He told the Russian people President Eisenhower is a man of peace
with the backing of all but a small minority of Americans.
President Eisenhower says he considers the Berlin impasse was broken during
his weekend talks with Premier Khrushchev and a beginning made toward better
Soviet-American relations.
President Eisenhower summons steel industry
and labor leaders to meet with him “to urge both
sides to resume free collective bargaining and
end the strike witch began 76 days ago.”
Ford unveils the 1960 line of cars including its
new American-made economy car - the Falcon.

General Motors says almost 8,000 of its employees will be laid off during the next
two weeks as a result of steel shortages if the steel strike is not settled during
that time.
Use of Taft-Hartley intervention may be nearing the 72 nd day of the steel strike.
Sports - The new Los Angeles Dodgers are going to the World Series where
they will play the White Sox.
Television news -
Dick Clark now has a third show on ABC-TV. He has “American Bandstand”
afternoons, “The Dick Clark Show” Saturday nights on a new Sunday night show
- “Dick Clark’s World of Talent.” It’s a talent show laced with veterans (see ad).

Hanna-Barbera. The producers say
the character is cashing in on the
current television western craze.
There’s also a detective craze, so
Hanna-Barbera also debuts -
Snooper and Blahber - a cat and a
mouse, plus Auggie doggie - a
father-and-son cartoon, not tied to
any craze.
