The Dow plummets 504 points among fears after the bankruptcy filing of Lehman
Brothers and a possible collapse of insurance giant AIG.
The Fed rescues insurance giant AIG with an $85 billion loan - the largest such
bailout in U.S. history. The action represents an abrupt about-face for the
government, which last weekend, appeared to signal an end to federal rescues of
private firms by allowing Lehman Bros. Holdings Inc to go belly up.
The Fed gives the green light for the two remaining major investment banks -
Goldman Sachs and Morgan Sachs and Morgan Stanley - to become bank
holding companies that can create commercials banks to take federally insured
deposits and make loans and otherwise act like any other bank.
Top government officials and congressional leaders agreed to quickly develop a
comprehensive plan aimed at defusing the nation’s financial crisis.
The Bush administration is asking Congress for the authority to spend $700
billion and for powers to intervene in the economy so sweeping that they have
virtually no precedent in U.S. history.
Barack Obama raised $66 million in August and is outspending John McCain in
advertising.
Technology -
The four major record labels plan
to start selling their music on mini flash memory
cards that can be loaded onto mobile phones,
digital music players and car stereos. The
slotMusic cards (made by SanDisk), will also
come preloaded with liner notes, cover artwork
and perhaps video. They are expected to go on
sale before the holiday season.
Napster Inc says it has agreed to be acquired by
Best Buy Co for $121 million. Best Buy says it
plans to use Napster’s technology and services
to sell music, video and more.
