Hurricane Hugo packing 135mph winds smacks into the South Carolina coast
sending a thundering wall of water against Charleston. Its toll through the
Caribbean is mounting - at 25 last count.
Precedent - A Tennessee judge awards custody of seven frozen embryos to a
wife embroiled in a divorce case, ruling, “Human life begins at conception.”
A USAir Boeing 737 jetliner crashes on takeoff at La Guardia Airport and breaks
into three pieces at the end of a runway, coming to rest with its tail in the East
River. At least three are killed and 49 injured. Flight 5050 was bound for
Charlotte, NC.
President Bush orders more than 1,000 military police, federal marshals and FBI
agents to St. Croix as the Coast Guard begins evacuating residents and tourists
terrorized by violence on the streets and looting in stores and homes shattered
by Hurricane Hugo.
Richard Ramirez , the Southern California serial
killer is found guilty of all 43 Night Stalker crimes,
including 13 murders.
President Mikhail S. Gorbachev announces that a
crucial party congress will be convened early. Many
believe he will use the meeting to purge Central
Committee conservatives and promising a
reorganization of the Communist party in a bid to
restore plummeting public confidence.
Actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. testifies that the PTL
board of directors on which he once served, was
little more than a rubber stamp for television
evangelist Jim Bakker. “It was called a board of directors, but at no time did it
operate like one.” “It was a board of approval for affirmation only.”
Deng Xiaoping, China’s senior leader, appears in public for the first time in more
than three months, meeting American professor at the Great Hall of the People.
Deng last appeared in public on June 9, when he met senior military officers and
praised their actions in suppressing student-led pro-democracy demonstrators at

troops shot their way into the city on June 3-4 to capture Tian An Men Square
from student demonstrators.
AIDS update - under pressure from AIDS activists, the medical community and
the federal government, Burrughs Wellcome Co. announces that it will reduce the
price of its expensive antiviral drug AZT by 20% effective immediately. The drug
had been costing the average patient with full-blown AIDS about $8,000 a year.
Passing - Robert Penn - wrote “All the King’s Men” and was honored as the
nation’s first poet laureate.

retails for about $5,800. The 25mhz

of the Mac IIex and comes with a

Brian Wilson, principal songwriter of the Beach Boys, sues
A&M Records, its publishing subsidiary Almo-Irving Music
and a law firm, seeking more than $100 million in real and
punitive damages and the restoration to Wilson of song
copyrights bought by Almo-Irving in 1969.
