President Reagan signs an executive order requiring drug testing for federal
employees in “sensitive positions” that could affect as many as 1.1 million of the
government’s 2.8 million civilian workers
The Reagan Administration orders the expulsion of 25 U.N.-based Soviet
diplomats in Washington, but denied that the action was related to the spy
charges Moscow has filed against American journalist Nicholas Daniloff.
Paris bombings continue - 5 are dead, 60 injured after two men in a passing car
hurl a bomb at a crowded clothing and textile store in Paris. The explosion is the
fifth bombing in 10 days.
First public comment - Mikhail S. Gorbachev says that
American journalist
Nicholas Daniloff
is a spy. Referring to him
as “the spy who was caught red-handed,” he said Americans are
trying to use it “to spoil relations… and to fan up hatred. “But we
will not become nervous and will not be provoked,” said Gorbachev.
Meet - Secretary of State Shultz and Soviet Foreign Minister Shevardnadze
agree their arms control differences have narrowed, but Shultz says there can be
no fruitful superpower summit meeting until American journalist Nicholas Daniloff
is released.

journalist have soured superpower relations.
Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III says that drug
smuggling is intertwined with the flow of illegal
aliens across the nation’s Southwest border and
urges Congress to pass an immigration reform bill
to help solve both problems.
Anti AIDS drug AZT, tested on only 146 patients,
will be given to as many as 6,000 AIDS victims
because it holds “great promise for prolonging life,” said the government. This
could happen within weeks.

operations to black investors there.

throw a no-hitter in a
game against the Angels. Final score - 7-1.
San Francisco 49er quarterback Joe Montana undergoes back
surgery and it is not known whether he can continue playing
football. The surgery involved butting away a portion of a
damaged disc that extended out from the spine.
Technology -
Sony’s latest compact disk promotion kicks off this week. Consumers will receive
two free CD’s and membership in the CBS CD club with the purchase of any
Sony CD player.

- Pioneered top-40 radio and
was the first to put an all-news radio station on the air. He also
built the 458-station Liberty Sports Network from scratch.
GTE has signed Stuart Denning as a spokesman for its
GTE2000, a phone with various speed dialing features. Who is
Stuart Denning? He’s a perpetual winner with Z-100 and their
various contests. Denning managed to “get in” and win a whole
bunch of contests, so much so, Z-100 (WHTZ) put a 30-day limit
on contest entries a while back.

(Sept 13) At Disneyland - Michael Jackson’s 3-
D film “
Captain EO”
makes its debut. The
unveiling of the 17-minute short was preceded by
a parade down Disneyland’s Main Street featuring
some 125 celebrities in chauffeur-driven antique
autos, a private party and a ribbon-cutting
ceremony at Tomorrowland’s new Magic Eye
Theater. “Captain EO” is described as “a 3-D
musical motion picture space adventure.” It was
produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and cost
around $20 million. It is the first public project involving Jackson since USA for
Africa’s “We Are the World” session last year.

Julian Lennon
is taking a hiatus from performing after a
disappointing reception for his latest record.
The Pet Shop Boys won’t be touring the U.S. after all.
They to kick off a tour Oct. 31 in San Francisco. It’s
postponed due to a number of reasons.
Run D.M.C. has been uninvited to the Los Angeles
Street Scene celebration. The decision was partly based
on uneasiness after gang violence at the group’s August
concert in nearby Long Beach.
Will the real LL Cool J. please stand up? - A guy named Lawrence Humphrey
files suit, claiming the LL Cool J’s “Radio” album criminally and fraudulently uses
his professional name, voice and compositions. The suit also charges fraudulent
use of the LL Cool J name during the rap performer’s personal appearances. The
suit alleges that Humphrey and defendant James Todd Smith, boyhood friends in
New York, recorded Humphrey and his compositions in the basement of smith’s
home in 1984. According to the complaint, Smith supplied the ‘simple beat’ which
has no originality and which does not contain any original copyrightable material.

Erma Bombeck
, who has been with ABC’s “Good Morning
America” since it debuted on Nov 3, 1975, is leaving. “It’s the
best job I’ve ever had, but I’m walking away from it.” She says
an increasing workload has made it impossible to continue.
The Disney Channel offers the movie “Pinocchio” the first time
this 1940 classic has been on television. It’s been available on
videocassette though, since July of last year.
David Letterman hosts the Emmy Awards on Sunday.
Heather Thomas, who co-stars on “The Fall Guy”, undergoes extensive plastic
surgery on her left leg after being struck by a car near Hollywood.
