stress family and moral values.
The United Autoworkers union begins a selective nationwide
strike against 13 GM plants.
President Reagan, championing the late President John F.
Kennedy, urges democrats to abandon their party because their leaders have
“decided to give us a dose of medicine that made us sick.” “By the end of the
campaign, you may decide your home is with us. I hope you do. I hope you’ll
walk with us down the new path of hope and opportunity.”
A suicide bomber drove a van loaded with explosive past concrete barriers and
through gunfire to the doors of the U.S. embassy in Beirut killing 23 - two
Americans. Commenting, President Reagan expressed his anger and sorrow and
declared that “we can’t just withdraw in the face of this kind of terrorism.
House speaker Thomas (Tip) O’Neill says that it is an “absolute disgrace” that
the Reagan Administration failed to provide better security for the U.S. Embassy
annex in Beirut.
Consumer prices rise .5% in August pushing the annual rate of inflation to 4.2 -
ahead of last year’s 3.8%.
Israel devalues the shekel by 9%.
Walter Mondale is getting heckled it seems, everywhere he goes. “I’m angry
about it,” Said Mondale. Asked if it was being done on President Reagan’s
behalf, Mondale said, “I do not know, but I do know that every place we go we
are receiving this now.’

and three “close”
political backers are indicted on charges of conspiracy and
perjury after an investigation into the mayor’s personal and
political finances. The indictments charge all with 14 counts
of perjury and one count of conspiracy to sidestep local
campaign donation limits and conceal illegal contributions in

connection with Hedgecock’s successful mayoral bid last year.
Sports - Muhammad Ali has undergone tests for a neurological ailment that has
slowed and slurred his speech. So far, physicians have ruled out Parkinson’s and
a syndrome known as punch-drunkenness. They’ve also ruled out Alzheimer’s
disease (it is in fact Parkinson’s).
Reggie Jackson hits his 500
th
homer as the Royals beat the Angels 10-1. His of
course, was the only run scored.
J. Paul Getty tops the Forbes 400 as the richest in the world at $4 billion worth.
Sam Moore Walton is again $2 at $2.3 billion. David Packard is #3 at $1.8 billion.
