Prime Minister Menachem Begin
of Israel submits his formal
resignation. The move clears the
way for Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir to form a new
government.
For the first time, President Reagan authorizes the use of American forces to
protect the Lebanese army. It’s part of a series of moves to protect the defenses
of the 1000 plus U.S Marines stationed in Beirut.
Japanese searchers find the first American ID in the Korean airliner, which was
shot out of the sky last week by the Russians. 269 perished in the waters of the
north sea of Japan, including 61 Americans.
IBM announces that it has developed a new chip with twice the storage capacity
of anything on the market. The chip uses something called “plate pushing” to
read data on its output. The chip has 512K dynamic RAM
Time Inc. drops its “TV-Cable Week” magazine after only five months. It’s the
company’s first failure in launching a magazine in 61 years. The company spent
$50 million so far on the project.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (29) is charged with possession of heroin after his bag is
searched after a flight. Kennedy was traveling to South Dakota on a flight from
Minneapolis when he became sick. Ironically, he was on his way to Black Hills to
seek help for drug dependency.

(20) - Miss New York,
becomes the first black to be crowned Miss
America. She’s from Millwood, NY in
Westchester County.

Barbara Bel Geddes who plays matriarch Ellie Ewing on “Dallas” is back at work
on the series. The actress suffered a heart attack in March. She’s missed the first
12 episodes of the new season.
Elena Holley Diaz, Buddy Holly’s widow - proclaims September 10 “Buddy Holly
Memorial Day” at a ceremony in Lubbock, TX.
In sports - Jimmy Connors wins the U.S. Open Men’s championship and Martina
Navratilova wins on the woman’s side at Flushing Meadow NY.
NBC says it’s adding two games shows
to the daytime schedule beginning in
October. One is “
Go
” with emcee Kevin
O’Connell... The other actually pairs two
older game shows - “The Match Game-
Hollywood Squares Hour.” In an unusual
idea - three contestants play “The Match
Game” the first half hour. Two high
scorers of that game get to sit in a
square on “The Hollywood Squares”
airing the next half hour. The winner on
“The Hollywood Squares” in turn, gets to play “The Match Game” once again in a
bonus round...
. WOW!
Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger gets his U.S citizenship in Los Angeles.
