Egypt rejects an 18-nation plan for international control of the Suez Canal. The
United States, Britain and France are in the midst of setting up a new
international organization for sending traffic through the canal. President Nassar
nationalized the canal on July 26. “The Suez Canal Co” - controlled by Britain
and France - is giving the signal for a mass walkout by pilots and technicians
who control traffic between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. Nasser is
attempting to find qualified personnel to take over, in case a strike happens.
Suez Canal pilots walk-off their
jobs, setting-up a crisis in the
area. Quickly, the Soviet Union
moves to supply Egypt with ship
pilots -with a promise to help
President Nasser to help settle
the dispute on their terms.
President Eisenhower
dispatches Secretary of State
Dulles to fly to London for a
new 18-nation conference. Eisenhower stresses that his mission is to assure that
the canal (seized by Egypt) “will perform the international service to which it is
dedicated.”
Basil O’Connor, president of the National Foundation for
Infantile Paralysis recommends everyone under 35 to get Dr
Salk’s
polio inoculation shots
. “I still think we can lick
paralytic polio in 1957, but we’ve got to get more people to
use the vaccine.”
In Clay, Kentucky - an angry mob turns back Negro
students from school with the National Guard being called
out.
Last rights are given for Francis A. Nixon (77), father of Vice President Richard
M. Nixon in Whittier, California. He was eulogized as a man of honesty, integrity
and courage who gave those qualities to his three sons.

Cary Grant
escapes injury in Copenhagen
after the car he was riding in was hit by a car
attempting to cross the highway. Grant was on
his way to the airport to fly back to Los Angeles.
In Los Angeles, singer Jimmy Boyd (17) is booked on a reckless
driving charge after smashing into a fire hydrant, ending a two-mile chase. The
singer and another boy were spotted drag racing on popular Van Nuys Blvd
when the chase began.

Film distributor National Telefilm Associates Inc - announces that it is creating
the “NTA Film Network” for television. So far, 102 stations have agreed to carry
about 90 minutes of programming a week.
Elvis Presley
makes his debut on “The Ed Sullivan
Show.” Ed won’t be hosting though - Charles
Laughton will be filling-in.
According to Trendex - Elvis Presley’s appearance on
the Ed Sullivan Show drew a 43.7 share - almost half
of everyone with a television set tuned in.
Oliver Hardy
(64) of Laurel and
Hardy suffers a stroke. No visitors
are allowed at St Joseph’s hospital in
Burbank.
Sylvester L. (Pat) Weaver Jr. resigns as board chairman of
NBC. “My record couldn’t be clearer. I leave it to the people in
the business to evaluate why I left.”
James Cagney makes his television debut this week in “Soldier
from the wars Returning” on NBC.
