President Bush meets with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chreten and
telephones leaders of the United Nations, the European Union, Turkey and Egypt
- seeking allies for a new U.S. initiative against Iraq.
Al Qaeda releases video footage claiming responsibility for the attacks on the
World Trade Center and Pentagon, saying the U.s. capitol was also a target and
hinted at future strikes against nuclear facilities.
The Bush administration raises the terror alert level to “code orange,” - a high
risk of terrorist attack.
First anniversary - President Bush appears at the
three sites where hijacked planes crashed last
September 11. “What happened to our nation on a
September day set in motion the first great
struggle of a new centrury,” said the President at
a ceremony at the Pentagon.
U.S. and Pakistani officials have captured Ramzi
Binaishibh, a suspected organizer of the Sept. 11
attacks.
President Bush challenges the United Nations to
join the U.S. in a drive to oust President Saddam
Hussein of Iraq. He said America would be alone
if necessary.
President Bush says he wants a “quick resolution” to the confrontation with Iraq
as Colin Powell launches a diplomatic offensive to win international support with
a showdown with Saddam Hussein.
U.S unemployment is 5.7% - down from 5.9% in July.
Sports -
Forest Hills - U.S. Open as Serena Williams defeats her older sister - and two-
time defending champion - Venus Williams. It’s her third consecutive Grand
Slam title - matching Steffi Graf’s run in 1996.
Technology -
Bill Gates goes to Hollywood to talk about his company’s new software platform -
Windows 9, saying it can stream TV quality video over the Internet, link with

digital rights management or DRM software - which regulates and tracks how
consumers watch and store movies.

Music news -
The family of Notorious B.I.G. has released
documents, saying they contend - and place the
rapper in a New York recording studio on the
evening that Tupac Shakur was gunned down in
Las Vegas. It was reported that Notorious met
with members of a Los Angeles gang in Las
Vegas the night that rival Shakur was shot.
Television news -
Fox says it will not renew Howard Stern’s “Son of a Beach. In its third year, the
show’s ratings have not improved much since its beginning.
The Sopranos return for another round of fresh episodes - on HBO.
Fox-TV scores its first-ever weekly ratings victory without the benefit of sports or
special programming with its assured hit - “American Idol.”
