United In Finland - President Bush and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev

issue a statement declaring support for economic and political sanctions against

Iraq. They warn that if current steps fail, they are “prepared to take additional

cones consistent with the U.N. Charter.”

Some 171 American women and children are flown to safety from Kuwait.

Meanwhile - Kuwait pledged to provide $5 billion over the rest of this year for

U.S. led military and economic campaigns against Iraq.

President Bush warns that the siege of Iraq many be long and costly, but pledged

that he will free Kuwait. He’s ready to use military force if sanctions fail.

Iraq follows the call of its old enemy, Iran and renewed its attack on the presence

of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia.

Secretary of State James Baker calls on NATO to send ground troops to join

U.S. troops deployed against Iraq.

President Bush attacks a House-sponsored crime bill, telling a group of

prosecutors that it is a “pro-criminal measure that “handcuffs the police.

Committee that the Constitution gives

HA! - The comedy channel will broadcast 100 half-hour episodes of “The Steve

Allen Show” beginning Oct. 1.

ABC cancels its weekend “The Health Show.”

All for one - ABC. NBC and CBS take out a print ad asking advertisers not to

abandon them for cable or syndicated TV. The networks have lost about 20% of

their prime-time audience to cable.

“The Joan Rivers Collection.” Joan Rivers will sell her new jewelry line on QVC.
