Chinese communists threaten
nationalist-held offshore islands with the
United States sending air and sea
reinforcements into the area. The U.S. is
committed to protect the Chinese
Nationalist stronghold of
Formosa
and
its neighbors. President Eisenhower
meets with Secretary of State Dulles in
an emergency conference - calling the
situation “serious.”
Red Chinese radio says that U.S warships “have again intruded into China’s
territorial waters, terming the action “a most dangerous act of deliberate
provocation.”
In Rhode Island for Labor Day, President Eisenhower calls for “complete
honesty, integrity, trustworthiness and loyalty” on the part of union leaders.
Jack Barry and Dan Enright,
producers of the TV game show “21”
reveal a tape-recording of a former
contestant who demanded $50,000
from Enright at his office, or he would
tell authorities he was fed answers as
a contestant on the program. The
tape was produced by Barry and
Enright, after contestant Herbert
Stempel told the district attorney that
he was fed answers on the show -
giving him total winnings of $49,500.
The production company was recently purchased by NBC on the success of “21”
for $4.8 million. The show is still on the air, but under a cloud of controversy.
During an
Ice Capades
performance on the Ed
Sullivan show (transmitted live) - clown Freddy Hinkler
tumbles into the crowd after the rope on his swing
breaks. From Madison Square Garden, Sullivan told his
TV audience neither the clown or the audience was
hurt.

While working on a Mother Goose sequence for
NBC’s “
Shirley Temple’s Story Book
” - the actress
is injured when she is lifted by her dance partner and
dropped to the floor. Her ankle was x-rayed and
bandaged.
Jockey
Eddie Arcaro
is re-elected
president of the Jockey’s Guild in New
York.
Lawrence Welk is named the honorary
mayor of Hollywood, replacing Art
Linkletter.
Blues singer
Sara Vaughn
is married to Clyde Atkins in Chicago.
He’s a taxicab fleet owner.
In radio news - station WNTA (Newark, NJ), serving New
York - begins a two-hour morning newsblock. It’s the first
time a station is programming a newsblock this long - in
morning drive. Up to now, longer news programs are aired
late afternoon and early evenings. WNTA is at 970AM and
94.7FM
