With Americans still holed up inside the U.S. embassy in Kuwait, 49 freed
hostages arrive in the U.S. - and said conditions were getting worse for those
back in Kuwait. So bad, their drinking water is coming out of the swimming pool.
Iraqi officials will now bar any airline other then their own from transporting
hostages out of the area
The U.S. Navy seizes an Iraqi Freighter in the Gulf of Oman. It’s the first use of
force to carry out the U.N. sanctioned embargo of Iraq.
In a speech, President Saddam Hussein assails the blockade of his country and
it’s reported he’s cut rations of thousands of foreign workers from the Third
World, and warns their government of their starvation unless they provide food.
President Bush accepts an offer from Baghdad to address of people of Iraq by
television. The 10-to-15 speech will be videotaped and gives the President the
opportunity to explain why American soldiers are in the Persian Gulf.
Sports - In the 4 th round of the U.S open, Martina
Navratilova loses to Manuela Maleeva Fragniere . Ms.
Navratilova said, “Wimbledon took so much out of me. I
wanted to be up, but I couldn’t quite kick it in gear.”
Television news - Comedy channel HA! signs comedian
Jackie Mason for a one-man talk show beginning in
September. Look for Jackie Mon-Fri.
Deborah Norville tells her “Today” show viewers she’s
pregnant.

In Dallas - Several thousand musicians attend
the funeral of rock and blues guitarist Stevie Ray
Vaughan , who was killed last week in a
Wisconsin helicopter crash.
