President Reagan warns Israel that annexation of the West
Bank of the Jordan River would set off a “crisis of massive
dimensions” in relations with the U.S. and would violate the
1979 Camp David accords. Prime Minister Menachem Begin
cuts short his vacation and calls for an emergency cabinet
session to deal with President Reagan’s demands.
In a televised speech, President Reagan calls for “a fresh start”
- that Palestinian self-government with Jordanian involvement would offer “the
best chance for a durable, just and lasting peace” in the Middle East.
Broadway star Mary Martin and actress Janet Gaynor are hospitalized when their
taxi is rammed broadside by a van running a red light in San Francisco. Martin’s
manager of 10 years was killed instantly.
Two commercial fishermen off of Hollywood, Florida catch a 364-pound tiger
shark and discover a man’s thigh and right leg in its stomach. Authorities were
notified, but they said they wouldn’t close any beaches. A tennis shoe was still on
the man’s foot.
Princess Marcella Borghese - renowned socialite and known for her beautiful
skin and founder of a cosmetics company - is scalded in a shower at her son’s
home in the Hamptons on Long Island. She was knocked down by the sudden
change in water temperature and couldn’t get back up. She was found
unconscious with the hot shower water still beating on her.
William Paley (81), founder of CBS - announces that he
will retire as chairman of the board of CBS next April. He’ll
be replaced by Thomas Wyman. Paley will continue on the
board of directors.
Westinghouse and Disney talks hit a snag on their $100
million cable channel. The channel is scheduled to offer 18
hours of family-oriented pay-TV programming beginning in
April. Group W refuses to go along with Disney demands for more management
and programming control over the service. Sources say both parties are at an
impasse and the deal will probably be restructured.

US Festival” near San Bernardino, California.
Stephen Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computers
and the brainchild of the festival said, “One of the
things we are celebrating, one of the things that is
good about the 80’s is technology. It’s bringing us
closer together.” Some of the bands scheduled to
appear: - The Gang Of Four, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, The Ramones, The
English Beat, Oingo Boingo, The B-52’s, The Police and The Talking Heads.

The Jerry Lewis telethon raises $28,415,339 - almost $3 million less then last
year. It’s the first time in the telethon’s 17-year history that pledges didn’t exceed
the previous years’. Lewis blamed it on a sluggish economy and high
unemployment.
After five years, actor Robert Young
(75) is canned by General Foods and is
no longer the spokesman for Sanka
Coffee. “They decided my commercials
had been milked to the limit, I agreed
with them. They were becoming
repetitious and annoying. They might
have begun turning people off the
product.”

Familiar to “I Love Lucy” fans. Novello played the tenant
who rented out the Ricardo’s apartment after witnessing
a murder - wanting “just peace and quiet.” He would
jump at every unfamiliar sound. Lucy finds out she
needs her apartment back and tries to scare him out. In
another episode, he guested as “Mario” from Italy - trying to raise money for a
bus ride to San Francisco to see his cousin.

Named to seven National League All Star games. His
brother was Clete Boyer - best known for his time playing
with the Yankees.
