Red rioting in Calcutta. India’s defense minister and the three military chiefs of
staff reportedly submitted their resignations to Prime Minister Nehru.
Senate and House conferees agree on a labor reform bill patterned on the House
legislation backed by President Eisenhower.
Communist aggression in Laos hits the United Nations - The United States
announces it will ask the U.N. Security Council to send a fact-finding
subcommittee to Laos, where rebels are threatening the government. The
Laotian government charges Communist North Vietnam - which is not a U.N.
member - is supporting the insurgents in Laos with troops, leadership cadres
and equipment.
In France - President Eisenhower and Gen Charles de
Gaulle end a two-day meeting with a short communiqué that
said they discussed all questions of interest to the United
States and France in a “very friendly and cordial
atmosphere.” The President completes his task to obtain
maximum cooperation from the Atlantic alliance before his
meeting with Premier Khruschev. He’s been in the area for
thirteen days, vesting Bonn, London then Paris. He’ll now fly
to Scotland for rest and relaxation before returning stateside.
President Eisenhower returns to Washington after his
historic trip to the allied capitals of Europe and reports that “everything is going
splendidly” there. Upon his arrival, he told the crowd of welcomers: “There is no
other single fact of the modern world that is now so important. I think, as this -
that the peoples of the western world have for each other a very deep, abiding
affection and mutual trust, and in this there is a tremendous spiritual, moral and
indeed a material and economic strength.” He said “every troublesome little
problem” between the western heads of government has been talked out on the
eve of Soviet Premier Khruschev’s visit to the United States next week.
Gang roundup in New York City - New
York City police say they have brought in
at least 200 teen-agers during a two-day
roundup to clear the city streets of “punks.”
The crackdown was ordered by local law
authorities after four teen-agers were killed
in the span of seven days in an outbreak

Rockefeller - appearing on WCBS-TV (Channel 2) “Eye on New York” said, “I
don’t think New York City has got a really more serious problem than our upstate
cities have. This is a world-wide phenomenon.” The governor praised New York
City Mayor Wagner for his swift action. Last week, a 17-year-old gang leader
fired a volley from his .22 rifle into a crowd and killed a 14-year-old girl.

Air Force scientists establish to
their own satisfaction that
spaceman of the future will be able to get along fine on a diet of nutritious cold
drinks. The Air Force recently finished testing of liquid menus at Wright-Patterson
on military and civilian volunteers - 15 men ranging in age from 21 to 29. The
men drank their meals three times a day with liquid snacks as desired in mid-
morning, mid-afternoon and mid-evening for five days.
The Air Force discloses that a camera in the nose cone of an Atlas
intercontinental missile has photographed one-sixth of the earth from a record
altitude of 700 miles. The pictures were made with 16mm film during a 5,100-mile
flight of an Atlas over the Atlantic missile range last year. Stills and movies taken
from the flight are being made available to the public for the first time this week.
The film shows a sweep covering parts of South America, the Pacific and Atlantic
Oceans, Northwest Africa, Nova Scotia, the eastern seaboard of the United
States and Mexico. Also on the film - a massive weather system extending all the
way from Florida to England. The nosecone was built by General Electric.
An estimated 40 persons a day are killed by
firearms in the United States. With gang trouble
among youth, especially in New York City - a
Gallup poll this week asked this question - “Which
of these three plans would you prefer for the use
of guns by persons under the age of 18 - forbid
their use completely, put strict regulations on their

use or continue at present with few regulations?”

shoulders are broader, sleeves are bigger, belts are wider, suit
jackets are generally longer, hats are higher, waistlines are
smaller, colors are brighter or blacker, jewelry is more
abundant, shoes are still pointed and hairdos are sleeker.
