Labor Day appeal - President Eisenhower calls for “complete honesty, integrity,
trustworthiness and loyalty” on the part of union leaders.

is hugged and kissed by two 12-
year-old girls as he emerged from services at the Navy’s
hospital chapel on the Coasters Harbor island base on
Rhode Island.
Nationalist warships sink 12 Red Chinese torpedo boats
in a battle off Quemoy Island. It’s the biggest action of its
kind in the long-drawn hostilities in Formosa Strait.
Little Rock - The school board puts off opening of
Central High School until Set. 15 in a show of good faith
with the U.S. Supreme Court. Meantime, Gov. Faubus says he would resist any
attempt by the Federal government to force integration of Central High School
through use of U.S. Marshals, Federal troops or any other means.
The United States warns Red China this country will move in with “timely and
effective” military force - including possible bombing of the Red Chinese
mainland - if necessary to save the islands essential to Formosa’s defense.
Red China orders general mobilization of its 600 million people and at the same
time, calls on the United States to resume ambassadorial talks to keep peace in
Formosa. The United States quickly accepts.
Radio Moscow reports that former Soviet Premier
Nikolai
Bulganin
has been removed from the Soviet Communist Party
Presidium. Bulganin was ousted last March 27 as Premier and
replaced by Nikita Khrushchev, Communist party boss. Four
days later, it was reported Bulganin had been made chairman
of the state bank with cabinet rank, listed 44
th
among the 60
members of the new Council of Ministers. On Aug. 15, he was
demoted again, named chairman of the Council of the national economy in the
remote Northern Caucasus town of Stavropol

New record - Disneyland officials report that 2,232.650 persons visited in June,
July and August. A total of 13,339,469 guests have visited Disneyland since it
opened July 18, 1955.
New space comic strip - Look for “Skymasters” outer space adventures in a
newspaper near you beginning this week. This week begins the adventurous tale
of man’s first entry into space.

Quiz show
problems
- Mrs. Regan Leydenfrost, a contestant
on the morning version of TV quiz show “Dotto,”
says she got aid on the show, but had not received
the exact answers to questions asked on the air.
“Dotto” has been off the air since August 16 and has
been investigated by the
New York DA since.

, co producers
of TV quiz show “21” say they have evidence that a
former contestant on the show had attempted to
blackmail them. They say according to contestant
Herbert M. Stempel that even though he said he
received answers in advance and in other cases and
was forced to miss questions against contender

Charles Van Doren (back on Dec 5, 1956), he said later the accusations were
“baseless and untrue and were part of a blackmail scheme to extort a large sum
of money from the firm Barry & Enright.” Stemple says otherwise: “Their
statement is entirely false and malicious. I never attempted blackmail I’ve never
confessed to anything except that 21 was fixed.”
Howard Stempel
said he won a total of $49,500 before
he lost Charles Van Doren. What’s interesting is, “21”
was so popular by 1957, NBC decided to purchase
Barry & Enright for $4.8 million. Not only did the network
get “21” but five other properties. Jack Barry and Dan
Enright continue to co-produce “21” which features Mr.
Barry as master of ceremonies.

- The Rev. Charles Jackson of Nashville
says he was given an answer by a Miss Bernstein in a
preshow briefing on the $64,000 Challenge. Program
officials deny the accusation.
