The Treasury department slashes the minimum guaranteed interest on U.S.
savings bonds from 7.5% to 6^ touching off a coast-to-coast buying spree by
small investors.
America’s trade deficit declined for the second consecutive month in September
to $12.56 billion.
In Columbus, Georgia - President Reagan, saying the nation’s economy is
headed for its second boom since his election, urged voters to reelect the
‘cleanup crew’ of republican senators swept into office with him in 1980.
President Reagan set out on his last and longest campaign trip of the season,
flying west to states where his personal popularity is high but his fellow
republicans are in trouble.
Consumer advocate Ralph Nader charges that President Reagan is selling “the
big lie” about the state of the nation’s economy as he campaigns across the
nation for republican candidates.

An irate John McEnroe raged at the umpire
after being upset by little-known Sergio Casal
of Spain in the quarterfinals of the Paris Open
tennis tournament and was promptly fined and
suspended.
Baseball’s world champion New York Mets will
visit the White House next week. The Mets had
a boisterous post-victory party in an East Side restaurant owned by former Met
Rusty Staub. Some 2.2 million New Yorkers too to the streets in a Mets ticker-
tape parade in lower Manhattan.
Meantime - Thousands of Boston Red Sox
fans honored their fallen heroes in an
“appreciation’ parade and rally in Boston.
San Diego Padres pitcher LaMarr Hoyt , the
American League’s best three years ago, is
arrested for trying to smuggle hundreds of
Valium and Quaalude tablets across the
border from Mexico.
