Boston heart specialist Dr Paul White says that President Eisenhower is
“convalescing well” and the heeling of his heart has speeded up and he should
be able to leave the hospital on schedule the week of November 5.” Complete
recovery should take two to three months.
William Woodward Jr
. - wealthy owner of the
racehorse Nashua is killed by a shotgun fired by
his
wife,
thinking he was a prowler. When she
switched on a light and discovered what she
had done, Mrs. Ann Woodward called police
screaming and sobbing. The couple had been
married 12 years. Nashua beat Kentucky Derby
Winner “Swaps” in an August race in a
$100,000 match. The couple had spent the
evening at a party for the Duchess of Windsor
at a nearby estate.
Mrs Rose Finigan (50), personal secretary to Film Director Cecil B. Demille, dies
as a result of a mistake in which she and a friend drank termite-exterminating
fluid instead of wine. According to her husband - his wife and friend Dolores
Hoyle decided to have a sip of wine at their home. Finding an ancient-looking
bottle under the sink, the two women sipped drinks and immediately spat it out -
both became sick. The other friend survived with a headache.
In Beckly, West Virginia - a father of four didn’t want to miss the finish of a West
Virginia - George Washington football game, so started his car in his garage and
listened to the game on the car radio. All of the windows of the station wagon
were up and the father, Richard Watts Jr. lapsed into unconsciousness. His wife
woke-up at 9 the next morning and called the fire department. The fumes spread
into the house, killing all four children. The car had run out of gas, but was still
turned to start. Watts and his wife are recovering in a hospital.

The Associated Master Barbers and Beauticians of America
go on record favoring a nationwide standard haircut price of
$2. It also recommended that beauticians adopt a minimum
$5 fee for work involving a haircut, shampoo and hair set.

Walt Disney announces that he will
release 10 new pictures over the next
18 months - all in color. Out of the 10,
2 will be re-releases. New production
includes “The Great Locomotive
Chase, “The Littlest Outlaw” and
“Davy Crockett” which is set for TV.
Filing for divorce - singer Dick
Haymes from Rita Hayworth.
Divorced this week - Marilyn Monroe
from Joe DiMaggio. The couple was
married January of last year. Monroe
claimed DiMaggio had treated her
with “coldness and indifferences” when she had expected “love, warmth and
affection.”
Arthur Godfrey
fires three more members of his
show - a musical director, an announcer and a co
producer. The action follows the firing of 6 singers
and 3 writers in April. When asked about the recent
firings - Godfrey replied: “Do I have to give
reasons? I’m running this job and if I can’t fire and
hire people to suit myself, I’m going to quit myself. It
is my show and when I see it is time to make
changes, I make them.”
Arthur Godrey fires one more employee - this time
his housekeeper. The housekeeper, Mrs Ingeborg
Sorenson, was employed by Mrs William
Woodward Jr., who fatally shot her husband this
week because she thought he was an intruder. Sorenson was quoted in the
paper as saying “the Woodwards often quarreled.” After reading the quote,
Godfrey fired her after hiring her a week ago. Sorenson left the Woodwards
about three weeks ago.
Actor
Peter Lawford
suffers second-degree burns when
acid being used in a skit on the Jimmy Durante TV show
spilled on his right arm and hand. The two were mixing “hair
tonic;” titanium tetrachloride was used to make a smoking
concoction when it spilled.
