Week of October 24, 1970
About 6,000 South Vietnamese infantrymen and rangers launched a new
offensive in eastern Cambodia to clear the area of North Vietnamese forces that
have been infiltrating back into former sanctuaries.
President Nixon and Prime Minster Eisaku Sato of Japan agree to resume
negotiations on a voluntary reduction of Japanese textile exports to the U.S.
President Nixon orders all federal vehicles to use low-lead or unleaded gasoline
wherever practical and asks the governors of al the states to do the same with
state owned vehicles.
Two Soviet students subdue the pilot of a small Russian passenger plane and
guide the plane cross the Turkish border - the second hijacking of a soviet plane
to turkey in two weeks.
Eldridge Cleaver says that he welcomes the
support of American expatriate fugitives such
as Dr. Timothy Leary, but added that the “high
priest” of LSD can’t join the Black Panthers
because of his race.
President Nixon escapes injury in San Jose as
shouting demonstrators hurled rocks, eggs
and battle at him. A rock just barely missed
him.
President Nixon says that “there is no cause
that justifies violence,” and calls on the
American people to elect Republican
candidates across the land because they
understand the law-and-order issue better
than the Democrats.
Vice President Agnew compares a band of youths who jeered through a
campaign speech in Illinois with demonstrators who threw missiles at President
Nixon in San Jose and said such “garbage’ should be separated from society.
He’s ruled insane - Charles (Tex) Watson - former Manson family member
accused in the seven Tate-La Bianca murders - is committed to Atascadero
State Hospital in California as psychiatric reports say he is insane.

Fashion - Customers in Chicago are invited to the funeral of the midiskirt at Mrs.
Toni Nelson’s shop in Glen Elleyn. “I stocked just enough midis for a funeral
because I knew this town wouldn’t accept it,” said Mrs. Nelson. “The midi is the
Edsel of 1970.”

In his first professional bout in 3 ½
years, Cassius Clay returns - and
defeats Jerry Quarry in a 3red round
TKO in Atlanta. Quarry - his swollen
brow latticed with 15 black stitches it
cook to close a two-inch gash. He
says that if Ali fought Joe Frasier -
that Frasier “will kill him.” You can
catch all three rounds this weekend
on ABC-TV’s “Wide World of
Sports.” Howard Cosell will
comment on all the action (this is the
beginning of Ali’s second incredible
rise and his association with Howard
Cosell).
National League baseball
attendance increased by more than 1.5 million to a record 16,662,198 paid
admissions in 1970. The New York Mets led with 2,697,495 paying patrons.

Appearing at the Troubdour in Hollywood - John Denver.
Marianne Faithfull is divorced by her American husband,
John Dunbar - on the ground that she was unfaithful
(adultery) - she admitted adultery with Mick Jagger. Jagger
agreed to pay $480 court costs to Dunbar. Since the case
came up originally in divorce court - Ms. Faithfull has found
a new boyfriend but remains friendly with Jagger.
Radio news -
The 43-member staff of Negro-formatted WLIB-AM/FM
New York walks out in protest of an employee who was let
go. WLIB competes with WWRL in New York in the arena
so Soul music. WWRL usually clobbers WLIB in ratings
though.

QM Productions is set by CBS to develop a second one-hour series for the 1971-
72 season titled Travis Logan, D.A. Also, QM is preparing a series for William
Conrad to star in something called “Starr” (later changed to Canon).
