close at 2,657,38.
A massive earthquake hits San
Francisco with many perishing under the
collapsed Nimitz Freeway. Seismologists
say the quake was centered on the San
Andreas Fault between Santa Cruz and
San Jose. It struck as thousands of fans
were crowding into San Francisco’s
Candlestick Park for the third game of
the 1989 World Series, forcing
cancellation of the game.
California places the death toll of the 6.9 San Francisco earthquake at 273.
In San Francisco - President Bush stands on Cypress street and gazes at the
wreck of the Nimitz Freeway… and utters: “Jesus.”
Boris N. Yeltsin
accuses Mikhail S. Gorbachev of trying to
drive him from politics in order to prepare for a sharp swing
back to conservatism.
Al Capone’s former Chicago headquarters is being converted
into a hotel. Today, the abandoned building is a neighborhood
eyesore, despite its city and federal landmark status.

Another bad rap - One man is shot and injured and several others came away
with minor injuries during a melee at a rap concert at the Oakland Coliseum. The
show featured Cool Moe Dee. MC Hammer, the Boys and Heavy D.
Showtime Event Television gets the PPV rights to a Rolling stones concert on
Dec. 19.
A&M Records will release an hour-long video titled “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm
Nation” a month after the album’s Sept. 19 release.

More Rap - a coalition of rappers lead a Stop the Racism concert and rally in
front of New York’s Harlem State Office Building that was attended by 2000
people. It was spearheaded by rapper Doug E. Fresh who was joined on stage
by Get Fresh Crew, KRS-1 & Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy and Stop
the Violence All Stars. LL Cool J. took the stage but was booed. Some in the
audience believe LL’s politics which seem to promote self over community issues
are no longer acceptable.

the dust as KJOI Los Angeles (98.7) will abandon the
instrumental format in favor of light vocals. KJOI had been with its elevator music
format for some 25 years.
Randy Kabrich resigns as operations manager of Pirate Radio in Los Angeles
and is going back to WRBQ Tampa as program director. Afternoon jock Shadow
Steele is the new OM of Pirate.
Frankie Crocker is back at WBLS and doing afternoons.

More Los Angeles as new talk station KFI will air something called “Meeting of
the Minds” featuring all its air talk personalities. Rush Limbaugh is flying in from
New York to participate as will Dr. Dean Edell from San Francisco. Also
participating - Tom Leykis, Mother Love, and Laura Schlesinger and other KFI
talk personalities.
