defrauded U.S. banks. President Reagan will not intervene to prevent the
indictment.
Business - executives of RJR Nabisco announce a proposal to buy their own
company for $17 billion.
The SEC, acting on the first anniversary of Black Monday, approves a one-year
test of “circuit breakers” that would halt trading in all stocks on all U.s. exchanges
for at least an hour if prices on stock or futures markets fall by specified amounts.
Take over? - Pillsbury directors vote unanimously to oppose a cash offer by
Grand Metropolitan, a giant British food and liquor conglomerate. By rejecting the
offer, analysts say Pillsbury may not only be buying time but also holding out for
more than the $60 per share offered by Grand Met.
Philip Morris announces an $11.8 billion cash bid to take over Kraft Inc, the
cheese and ice cream maker.
U.S intelligence says soviet arms shipments to Nicaragua Sandinistas have
fallen off about 20% this year
Weekly radio address - President Reagan said the Democrats
who control Congress are directed by “liberal big spenders” and
he asked voters to reject their party in next month’s elections for
the Senate and House of Representatives. In a broadcast
response, Rep. Dennis Eckart of Ohio charged that Reagan had
engaged in “needless confrontation” with the legislative branch
and forced Congress to override a dozen presidential vetoes of
clean water, trade and civil rights bills in the past two years.”

Seeking to build enthusiasm, vice presidential candidate Lloyd Bensten invokes
the spirit of comebacks past, telling voters all day, that it was not too late for a
democratic resurgence.
Campaigning in Illinois,
Dan Quayle
tells the audience that
Michael Dukakis was “a drag on the ticket and George Bush is
very much of a positive for us.”
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher pledges that Britain “will be a
strong ally of the next American President.” ”President Regan
has rebuilt the strength and confidence of the West - not
without a little help - and inspired the democracies to go out
and win the battle of ideas.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series, beating Oakland in just five
games.

” is set for videotape
release October 27, followed in December by release of
the laserdisc version of the movie. Videotape price

KIIS-FM Los Angeles is up in the ratings to a 6.9 from a 6.5. Also in LA - The
Wave (KTWV) with no DJ’s is up to a 3.0 from a 1.7. KPWR is up to a 6.1 from a
5.1. KIIS-FM Steve Rivers is experimenting with “zero talk hours” on the station -
no jock talk.
Howard Stern
announces that he will be back on the
air in Washington DC, after Infinity’s WBMW becomes
WJFK and modifies the daytime to lean more male
alternative rock.
Speaking of New York - as of Sept 22, WQHT (103.5)
and WYNY (97.1) have swapped channels so if you
want Country ‘YNY, you’ll have to tune to 103.5.
Until last week, Tom Joyner was commuting between
two radio jobs - Dallas and Chicago five days a week.
He’ll only do three now as two days will be fed by satellite from Dallas to
Chicago. Joyner lives In Dallas.
Adult standards KOMA Oklahoma City goes oldies. KOMA was one of the great
top-40 stations of the 1960’s-1970’s.
Rap becoming more popular -
D.J. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince so far, have landed two top 15 hits on the top
100 - “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “A Nightmare On My Street.”
Music news
- “Big Thing!” - Duran Duran’s latest album is
released this week. This week, the band begins a 20-date
tour beginning in San Francisco… Robert Palmer kicks off
the second North American leg of his Heavy Touring Nova
road show next week in New Orleans. Still touring - The
Moody Blues, New Edition (with guests Al B. Sure and
Bobby Brown).
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts land their first top 10 hit in six years with “I Hate
Myself for Loving You.”
MTV broadcasts highlights of a benefit concert U2 gave in London last Sunday.
Also on the broadcast - Robert Palmer, Ziggy Marley, Eddie Grant, Boy George,
Tm Tom Club, Robert Cray, Erasure and Keith Richards.

Fresh from “Monsters of Rock” - Van Halen is setting to tour again beginning Oct
30 in Lexington, KY.
WHTZ (Z-100) music director Frankie Blue says the station is
playing the best new music first in New York. Three weeks
ago, it was Bon Jovi, two weeks ago, U2 and the past week,
Barbra Streisand & Don Johnson’s “Til I Loved You.” Of the
latter, Blue says - “the curiosity factor of this record is
incredible. We got lots of calls, all wanting details on the
collaboration.”
With their Pyromania and Hysteria albums, Def Leppard
becomes the first act in history to top the 7 million mark in
U.S. sales with two different albums. Runners-up to def
Leppard are Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, who
have each topped the 6 million mark with tow or more albums.
My hitting the 7 million mark, def Leppard has pulled ahead of
Jackson.
Warner Brothers has stickered the latest Sam Kinison album
with two warning labels, In addition to the customary Tipper
Gore inspired “parental Advisory” label, the album “Have You”
also has a sticker cautioning, “Opinions expressed on this
record do not express the view of Warner Bros. Records.”
Sam Kinison rounds-up some friends for his video “Wild
Thing” - a cover of the big 1960’s hit by the Troggs. Out front
is Jessica Hahn. Also appearing - Steven Tyler, Joe Perry,
Billy Idol, Steve Adler, John Waite, Tommy Lee, And Richie
Sambors (drummer for Bon Jovi).
The heavy-metal band Poison has its own computerized pick-
up service which allows band members to locate favorite
girlfriends in any city on its tour.
Another Compact Disc format? That’s right - CD-3 -sort of mini-CD’s. You need
an adapter for your current CD player. Out last year and with now more than 220
CD-3 titles out, CD-3 is still viewed by most manufacturers as being in a test -
marketing phase.
