At a televised national debate,
President Carter repeatedly calls
Ronald Reagan “dangerous” and for
the majority of the 90-minute event,
kept the focus off his own record
instead calling attention to Reagan’s
past positions and statements. Reagan focused on the President’s economic
record defense issues.
The Labor Department reports that the cost of living is climbing at the annual rate
of 12.7% - bad political news for President Carter.
In Phoenix, a package bomb with a “trick or treat” message blows up in a shower
of nails and tacks, injuring nine. Employees of Brookshire’s Pacific Assn picked
up the package at a post office and called the addressee, Jason Himmelstein to
open it. “Go ahead” he said. Office workers gathered around as one of them,
Starlene Grimes, opened the package revealing a jewel box with the trick or treat
sticker. The box blewup after Grimes opened it.
The government warns that more and more Americans
will be killed in Moped accidents if the current boom is
not balanced by stricter safety rules. Some states have
no age or driver’s license requirements governing their
use. More than one million Mopeds have been sold in
the U.S.
The FCC makes final its regulation on a fundamental
change of authorizing other companies to share or resell WATS (wide area
telecommunications service) and other long distance lines. A hotel could resell
time on a WATS line to guests placing long-distance phone calls or a number of
small companies in the same city could band together to share a line.
Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin Jr. sues the
publisher and authors of “The Roswell Incident for libel.
The book says he sighted extraterrestrial spacecraft and
reported it to mission control shortly before the mood
landing of July 20, 1969. Aldrin says the information could
lead people to think he was “ bizarre, perverse, unreliable,
unfit, eccentric, ludicrous, unscientific and wayward.”

In Cockeysville, Maryland - a wayward buck smashes into a store advertising
hunting licenses and wrecked the sporting goods store. The deer demolished the
front window then rampaged through the place, breaking several expensive
fishing rods and a glass counter. It left through the same shattered window,
suffering a few small cuts.
General Mills unveils a new “Betty Crocker” for 1980. The latest Better Crocker
has shorter hair worn in casual waves just below the ear, appears to be a bit
younger and wears somewhat less formal clothes than her most recent
predecessor who debuted in 1972. The first Betty Crocker debuted in 1936.
Kentucky Governor John Brown Jr. gives the state’s
highest honor, the Governor’s Distinguished Service
Medallion to Col Harland Sanders (90). Sanders
actually opposed Brown’s election. Sander’s
Kentucky Fried Chicken has made him a multi-
millionaire.
In sports - The Philadelphia Phillies win the World
Series for the first time eve, beating Kansas City
Royals in game six. Series MVP Mike Schmidt
singled in two runs during a controversial third inning
and the Phillies scored solo runs in the fifth and sixth
inning. Tug McGraw pitched the 4-1 win.
At a fundraising gala for the opera in New
York’s Lincoln center, Beverly Sills (51)
retires from the stage and makes her last
performance. She will continue as managing
director of the New York opera.
“Saturday Night Live” announces their new
line-up for the new season: Denny Dillon,
Charles Rocket, Ann Risley, Joe Piscopo, Gail
Matthius and Gilbert Gottfried.
Paul Kanter , (39),
leader of the Jefferson Starship suffers a serious stroke.
Tests are being taken to determine the extent of the
damage and whether surgery will be required. Kanter
helped to found the Jefferson Airplane in 1965. In 1974, he

and Grace Slick, the mother of his daughter assembled the Jefferson Starship.
