In a series of events in the rivalry in the nation’s space
program - Maj. Gen. John Medaris - head of the Army
Ordnance Missile Command - quits with Army space scientist
with
Wernher von Braun
threatening to quit. Von Braun said
his boss was quitting because of “foot dragging” in the space
program. He said he may quit if his team of Army scientists at
Huntsville, AL if it is not kept intact and occupied in important
work. Von Braun was Germany’s top rocket expert in World
War II.
President Eisenhower strips the Army of its space responsibilities and transfers
it’s rocket wizards and scientists to the civilian National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA). In a shakedown last year - NASA took-over the Army’s
Jet propulsion laboratory at Caltech in Pasadena. The move effectively includes
Huntsville and the Von Braun team.
On a crowded street corner in Havana, Roberto Hernandez tries to kill Fidel
Castro with a knife - but bodyguards shunt the attack.

begins a Lyndon
Johnson-for-President drive and that work would start
immediately to organize Texas. Rayburn is also from
the state.
Passing - General George Chatlett Marshall (78) -
helped lead U.S. arms to victory in World War II and
fathered the cold war Marshall Plan for European
Recovery. That plan sought to restore the upset world
balance of power by helping to put Western Europe
back on its feet economically. The four-year
undertaking cost $17 billion.
Pope John XXIII announces that American Mother
Elizabeth Ann Seton
has passed yet another stage to
become a saint. Mother Seton could become the first
Native American saint, but canonization is still a long way
off. The nun passed away in 1821.
In sports - Whitesox Al Lopez is named manager of the
year in the balloting by members of the e Baseball
Writers’ Assn of America. Casey Stengal had been
named by the writers through the past four years.

Stripper Virginia Rangle is booked on suspicion of burglary after sending a
moving van to haul everything out of actor Broderick Crawford’s home in Beverly
Hills. “I was just trying to help him while he was away. His lease was running out
and there was nobody else to take care of his things” Detectives got suspicious
after learning that she sold some of the furniture to an auctioneer. Furthermore,
the mansion was rented furnished. By the time police arrived - about $25
thousand of furniture and personal belongings were packed. Crawford - who
stars in the television series “Highway Patrol,” is in London this week.
A judge approves a contract for Jay North (7) - television’s “Dennis The Menace.”
He’ll start out at $600 per episode the first year up to $1,500 a week at the end of
five years.

Foundation in Kansas, is discovered working as a store clerk
in Topeka. The owner hired the actress as part of her
therapy.
Jerry Lewis and wife Patty
announce the birth of a son -
named Anthony Joseph. The
baby’s weight was 6lb, 11oz.
Married 15 years, the couple have 4 other sons -
Gary-13; Ronnie-0; Scotty-4 and Chris-2.
Actor Barry Fitzgerald (71) undergoes brain
surgery in Ireland. A source says he’ll likely be
inactive for sometime.

“Name That Tune” is cancelled by CBS
this week. McGeorge de Witt read this
statement on the air - “You have all
probably seen or heard the new statement
of policy of CBS, that it is, among other
things, terminating the performance of all
shows on which contestants may win large
sums of money. “Name That Tune” has
been affected by that decision, so that with

deep regret, I must tell you that this will be the last “Name That Tune”
performance on CBS.”
Unlike CBS, NBC says it will retain its 10 quiz shows. “These program forms
virtually parallel the life of broadcasting, radio as well as television. Millions of
Americans like and want them.”
“Person to Person” producers John Aaron and Jesse Zousmer quit
the series and network after President Frank Stanton called for a
drastic program of honesty and realism in all CBS programs in the
wake of the tainted game shows. He cited all programs, including
“Person to Person” - which the producers took to be offensive.
