Making waves - First Lady

Saturday was seen touring museums and other places,
and was observed to have changed into four outfits
during a one-day tour of Iceland’s capital.
Over 400 perish and thousands injured in an earthquake
in San Salvador.
Almost - Deadlock on “Star Wars.” The Reykjavik
(Iceland) summit between President Reagan and
Mikhail S. Gorbachev ends in failure. They came ever
so close on agreement to eliminate all offensive nuclear
weapons in both countries, but at the end, the
deadlocked over the U.S. Strategic defense Initiative
(Star Wars). President Reagan, told U.S. troops at an
air base nearby that the negotiations had broken down
over Gorbachev’s insistence that the U.S. limit the testing of SDI to the
laboratory.
Meantime, Mikhail S. Gorbachev blamed
President Regan for failure of their Iceland
negotiations but holds out hope for a future
agreement on nuclear arms control. “I said
to the President: ‘We are missing a historic
opportunity.’ Never had our positions been
so close together,” Gorbachev told news
reporters.
A top Administration official says that a fuming President Reagan made it clear to
Mikhail S. Gorbachev that he doubted his sincerity, bluntly telling the Soviet
leader, “You don’t really want another summit.”
Hand grenades are thrown at a crowd of Israeli soldiers and their parents near
Jerusalem’s Wailing Wall. 40 are hurt.
President Reagan said that “historic gains” were achieved at the weekend
summit in Iceland. Although he reaffirmed his “Star Wars” stand, he said the
summit would form a sound basis for arms control negotiations in Geneva.

The federal government sends home half a million non-essential employees,
including President Reagan’s maids and gardeners due to a Congress filibuster
which failed to approve needed spending legislation.
President Reagen, in North Dakota to help out GOP Sen. Mark Andrews,
defends his “Star Wars” proposal as a “purely peaceful technology” and
compared it to the World War II radar used to beat back the Nazis.
The Senate approves a record $576-billion omnibus spending measure that
would fund all government agencies in fiscal 1987 and provide for the first time in
nearly three years, the military aid to the Nicaraguan rebels that President
Reagan has sought.
The Soviet Union, in a surprise move releases Jewish dissident David Goldfarb,
who once spurned a KGB overture to frame American newsman Nicholas
Danhoff. The move was welcomed by the Reagan Administration.
Wendy’s International, the nation’s third largest hamburger chain, says it’s
dumping Pepsi for Coke at all its 1,212 company-owned outlets.

with a bullet in her head, fired from an

In Tanzania - a small plane carrying Mother
Teresa skids into a crowd seeing her off and

named winner of the 1986 Nobel peace Prize.
Rita Levi-Montalcini - an American biochemist and an
Italian-American biologist, wins the 1986 Nobel Prize in
medicine for her discoveries on cell growth.
After 5 ½ months, Expo 86 in Vancouver ends. About 22
million people attended - 9 million more than predicted.

Apple reports that its profit soared 47% last quarter, while Honeywell says profits
fell 42% for the same period.

Sports -
Olympics every two years? - The International Olympic Committee has decided
to separate the Summer and Winter Olympiads after the 1992 games, breaking a
70-year tradition. The committee agreed to stage the Winter Games in 1994 and
continue thereafter at four-year intervals, midway between the Summer Games
which are also held every four years.
Martina Navratilova
wins her 1,000
th
tennis match. The only
other woman to win 1,000 is Chris Evert Lloyd, who now has
1,1,43 victories.
The New York Mets win the NL pennant in a 16-inning game
against the Houston Astros. Final score was 7-6.

Michael Jackson, own of the Beatles song catalogue, refused to give Def-Jam
artists the Beastie Boys the right to record a new version of the Beatles “I’m
Down.” Jackson thought the version made a mockery of the Beatles.
Whitney Houston’s self-titled debut alum is certified at 7 million U.S. sales. Nice!
Andy Taylor
has quit Duran Duran and is working on his
debut solo album.
“The Late Show” starring Joan Rivers is dedicated to the
music acts performing on the show. The program has the
same digital gear found in many recording studios in an
attempt to create the studio sound. And, the show is
broadcast in stereo.
Motown is releasing a special compact disk version of “The Motown Story.” And it
should be in stores by mid-November.

Ken Kragen reports that USA for Africa has raised more than $51 million to date
with its “We Are The World” project. The foundation’s other project, “Hands
Across America,” has to date brought in $24.5 million. Look for “From Sea to
Shining Sea,’ a 60-minute documentary covering the Hands Across Amerce
event early next year.

It’s announced that
Jay Thomas
will be the new morning
man on “Power 106” Los Angeles beginning Sept. 27.
Thomas was the morning man at WKTU when it flipped into
WXRK last year, but left in January. His slot was filled by
afternoon man Howard Stern.
Howard Stern takes a toll on rival WNEW-FM as its
morning show is disbanded this week. Goodbye to Richard
Neer and Mark McEwen and the WNEW-FM “Breakfast Club.” The station is
looking for able morning replacements. Good luck! The morning show has seen a
decline in the ratings since late last year.
Joel Saklowitz is now program director of WQHT New York. He had been
assistant PD when the station switched this year.
