Former Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka of Japan is
found guilty of accepting of $1.8 million bribe from the
Lockheed Aircraft Corp. It was the first time in Japan’s
recent history that a politician had been convicted of a
crime committed while serving as prime minister.
President Reagan unexpectedly selects National
Security Adviser William P. Clark to replace
controversial James Watt as secretary of the Interior.
Snipers shoot and kill a U.S Marine and wound another
while they were on patrol in their jeeps near Beirut
airport, bringing the latest casualties to five Marines killed and 41 wounded in the
last four weeks of peacekeeping operations.
President Reagan appoints special Middle East envoy Robert C. McFarlane to
succeed William P. Clark as his national security adviser.
A report released by the EPA this week - “Can We Delay a Greenhouse
Warming?” says the Earth will begin warming in the 1990’s and that average
temperatures will rise nearly four degrees Fahrenheit by 2040 and nine degrees
by 2100.
A natural gas explosion and fire destroys a crowded grocery store in Charleston,
South Carolina. A state trooper says, “there is no building left” and it’s estimated
that around 70 are dead.
Airbus Insustrie says that it has received a $225 million order from British
Caledonian Airways for at least seven A320 jetliners. The company says it a
“most significant” step toward the long-awaited formal launch of the all-new 150-
seat plane. The A320 is seen as crucial to the future of Airbus, because it make it
more competitive with Boeing and Mcdonnell Douglas which dominate the
market for standard-bodied jets.. Airbus is aiming for a launch by December in
order to make the A320 available for delivery in the spring of 1988.
The auto industry begins its 1984 model year with a 45% leap in the sales of new
cars - a sharp contrast of the bleak results a year ago. Chevy was up 47%, Ford -
68%, Chrysler Corp - 11% with American Motors up 8.6%.

The technical adviser to the movie “Eddie and the Cruisers”
is John Lyon - better known as “Southside Johnny,” leader of
the Asbury Jukes - a well-known rock band from Asbury Park,
New Jersey - just Southwest of New York City. . Eddie is
played by Michael Pare’ - who was born and raised in North
Tarrytown, NY - just north of New York City. Music on the film
is actually performed by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown
Band. Ironically, the Asbury Jukes and the John Cafferty Band
have spent their careers dodging the same comparisons to
another artist from the Asbury Park area - Bruce Springsteen.
Ted Turner announces that he will purchase the rival Satellite News Channel for
$25 million. The channel will cease operations with the acquisition. Turner’s
Cable News Network and CNN Headline News will be offered to cable systems
now carrying SNC, which is owned by ABC Video Enterprises and Westinghouse
Broadcasting. The two competitors have been losing money - but SNC had been
losing more money than the Turner Channels.
