Week of October 8, 1971
President Nixon, seeking to cut inflation by one-half - unveils the second portion
of his new anti-inflation program. Speaking to a national television audience, Mr.
Nixon claimed that the 90-day freeze on price, wage and rent increases he
imposed on Aug. 15 “has been remarkably successful.” As evidence, the
President cited a Labor Department report that wholesale prices last month fell
by .4%.
AFL-CIO President George Meany calls for an
emergency meeting of the nation’s union leaders in
Washington to map out a strategy on behalf of all
organized labor. It all has to do with President Nixon’s
Phase 2 program of wage and price stabilization that is
scheduled to take effect November 14.
Terrible Ted Walters , former public enemy No. 2 and
contemporary of Bonnie and
Clyde, is killed by a rifle shot
fired by a Texas Ranger.
Four teens and their teacher are killed and 4 injured when
a boiler in the annex of the First Baptist Church in Marietta,
Ohio exploded.
Passing - retired Lt. Gen Lewis B (Chesty) Puller - most
decorated Marine of all time - in three wars. He was 73
and received 56 decorations during his service from 1917
to 1955.
The discovery of the chemical that makes hormones work
in the body earns Dr. Earl Sutherland Jr. of Vanderbilt University a Nobel Prize.
President Nixon announce he will go to Moscow lat next May to “review all major
issues” with Soviet leaders.
The children of the late President John F. Kennedy and their mother - seek an
injunction against Ronald Galella, the photographer whose pictures have
appeared widely in magazines and newspapers. The court affidavit says that he
has harassed and frightened them and even trailed them to Greece to chase
them on land and sea.

He was 78.

Sports - It looks like instant replays help, and not hurt officials. They prove that
officials get 95% of their calls correct. Instant replay was first used by ABC in
1967 during the U.S. skiing championships. The Ampex recorders use discs
instead of tape. The disks permit variable speed playback, plus stop motion,
since there is no rewind process, as easily possible with tape recorders. Another
benefit of discs to tape - Access to recorded pictures can be accomplished much
more quickly and accurately. There is no rewinding.

who failed in a bid to make baseball’s New

song of the year. “I Won’t Mention It Again” by
Ray Price got albums of the year. And single of
the year “Help Me Make It Through The Night”

John Lennon celebrates his
31 st birthday in Syracuse, NY. He and Yoko are
there for an opening of her solo art exhibit at the Everson Museum of Arts. The
exhibit is titled, “This is Not Here.”
