Britain - Prime Minister Macmillan and his Conservative party wins a sweeping
election victory.
Iraq’s revolutionary Premier Kasem is shot by an assassin in a Baghdad street
but escapes serious injury.
Declaring it will not be beaten, the United Steelworkers Union says a court order
may force an 80-day truce in the record steel strike, but their leader indicated
they might strike again, after a Taft-Harley truce.

Charles de Gaulle
calls for a vote to his Algerian
peace plan and puts it in front of the National Assembly.
A group of scientists wants the government to set up an agency
for - scientists - to keep the peace. The group - including two
Nobel Prize winners, would help solve “technical” problems
such as disarmament.
In a Gallup Poll - Most believe it takes a minimum of $79-per-
week income to make it as a family of 4.
The Weather Bureau respectfully rejects, for the time being at least, suggestions
that it try to knock out hurricanes with H-bombs. In the first place it knows of no
reason for believing the attempt would succeed. In the second place, it is
conceivable that an H-bomb explosion, instead of killing a hurricane, would make
it worse.
In a Gallup Poll, President’s Eisenhower’s popularity has risen to its highest point
since May 1957 as 66% like the way he’s doing his job.
Sports - The Dodgers crush the Chicago White Sox 9-3 as the Dodgers win their
second World Series. With homers by Duke Snider, Wally Moon and Chuck
Esseglan and 5-innings of pitching by Larry Sherry.

s suspended from his $50,000-a-year job as a
commentator-performer for NBC in the midst of congressional
hearings on “fixing” of two more quiz programs.

Charles Van Doren ends a four day retreat to accept a subpoena in private to
appear before a congressional committee investigating fixed quiz shows and to
announce in public he had nothing to say on the subject before his November 2
appearance.
A House subcommittee has evidence that the “$64,000 Question,” first of the bi-
money TV quiz shows was rigged.
Fooling the public with rigged television sows is a fraudulent and deceptive
practice, but not an illegal one, the FCC tells congress. “We can’t determine who
has been harmed. The home viewer certainly didn’t pay his way into the show,”
said a spokesperson.
House investigators are told that Thomas Ervin, producer of the NBC quiz show
“Tic Tac Dough” has been fired because he refused to swear to the network that
contestants had not been given advance answers.

Lanza’s funeral procession.
Elizabeth Taylor is reinstated by MGM studios after she
agreed to play role in the film version of “Butterfield 8,” the
controversial novel by John O’Hara. The temperamental
actress was suspended last week by the studio because of
her refusal to play the role. At that time she complained the
part was chosen for her “was little better than the role of a prostitute.”

- Ted Steele quits his DJ shift at

show seen on WNTA-TV (Channel 13). “Dance
Party” is seen every night at 11pm.
Dick Biondi of WKBW Buffalo issues the self-
penned “Disk Jockey Handbook” which lists
typical comments made to record pluggers from
DJ’s:
“Man, it’s a smash!” - Which is a warm-up for
how soon can I get the artist for my hop.
“I’d like to play it, but the rest of the guys in the
meeting didn’t dig it.” In reality, the jock forgot to
bring the record to the music meeting.
“I’m getting calls for it every night.”
