Passing - Pope Pius XII, for 19 years, the “Pope of Peace”
after two strokes. He was 82.
The Air Force launches its second moon rocket. With an 85-
pound instrumented payload in its nose, the three-stage
rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral. The successful
launch followed the loss of a Jupiter intermediate ballistic
missile launched earlier.
Another attempt fails - A slight loss of thrust in the Pioneer lunar probe stops
America’s second attempt to reach the area of the moon.
The State Department accuses Russia of attempted intimidation for ordering the
Columbia Broadcasting System to close its Moscow bureau in reprisal for CBS
programs in this country. They particularly cited the CBS drama “The Plot to Kill
Stalin” which pictured Nikita S. Khrushchev as part of a conspiracy to kill the late
Russian Premier. Russia has protested the program to the State Department as
a “filthy slander.”
In Rome - Pope Pius XII is buried beneath St. Peter’s Basilica after a funeral
ceremony.
Entertainment news - Grace Metalious (Martin) says
she has sold movie rights to a sequel to her novel “Peyton
Place” to 20 th Century-Fox for half a million dollars.
Actor Ed Hinton is killed when the light plane he was riding
veered into a cliff on Catalina Island. The plane took-off
fine, but came back, apparently so Ed could wave to his
wife and kids on a dock. It headed back out, but was too
low and hit a cliff. He was vacationing on the island with
his family when he got a call from 20 th Century-Fox to report for a new picture.
Actress Barbara Stanwyck says she wants and is eager to appear in a TV
western.
