An Amtrak Sunset Limited train derails at a bridge over a dry wash in the Arizona
desert. The tracks were apparently sabotaged by a group calling themselves
“Sons of Gestapo.” At least 100 were hurt.
Suspected Bosnian Serb gunners launch bomb attacks that killed or wounded
dozens of civilians at a refugee camp in Bosnia.
A 7.6 earthquake hits the Pacific coast side of Mexico with dozens dead.

An ambush by Hezbollah guerrillas kills
three Israeli soldiers in southern
Lebanon.
A computer failed late in the countdown and grounded NASA’s oldest space
shuttle - as the countdown is halted for the fourth time.
Anti-nuclear scientist Joseph Rotblat and his associates win the 1995 Nobel
Peace Prize
House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) tells fellow Republicans he is worried that
a presidential candidacy by retired Gen. Colin L. Powell could frustrate the goals
of the party’s 1994 electoral victory and asked them whether he should become a
candidate himself.
“Dateline NBC” will feature an interview with O.J. Simpson - his first TV
interview. Apparently - O.J. has a pay-per-view event coming up - and this could
be a chance to promote that. Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric will interview. But

wait - O.J. pulls out of the interview, fearing it would be a confrontation rather
than a conversation.
Forbes says Bill Gates is the richest again - worth an estimated $14.8 billion.
Warren Buffet comes in second - at $11.8 billion with John Kluge third at $6.7
billion. Next is Paul Allen at $6.1 billion then Sumner Redstone at $4.8 billion.
HeathSouth says it has agreed to buy Surgical Care Affiliates Inc. in a $1.2 billion
deal that would make it the nation’s largest operator of outpatient surgery
centers.
Federated Department Stores says that all 21 west-coast Bullock’s stores will be
converted to Macy’s.

Japanese police arrest cult figure Fumihiro Joyu in a deadly terrorist attack on
Tokyo subways.
Actor Robert DiNero bloodies a video cameraman’s nose outside a NY club and
is charged with misdemeanor assault - is booked and fingerprinted by police.
Later, charges are dropped.

Rapper Tupac Amaru Shakur is released from Riker’s Island prison in NY after
Death Row Records put up $1.4 million bail. The rapper was sentenced in
February to between 1-1/2 and 4-1/2 years in prison for a 1993 sexual assault
on a woman in a Manhattan hotel
room. He is free pending an
appeal.
Rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg will
remain free on $1 million bail while
he awaits his murder trial but the
Dogg will be monitored
electronically.
