Week of October 5, 1981
President Anwar Sadat is assassinated by a band of
men in Egyptian army uniforms - opening fire from a
jeep during a military parade. The men then jumped
out, charging the reviewing stand - firing shots and
hurling at least one grenade. Two others were killed in
the attack and thousands fled the scene in panic. At
least three groups claim a roll in the killing. Vice
President Hosni Mubarak will step into his shoes.
President Reagan says, “America has lost a close
friend, the world has lost a great statesman and
mankind has lost a champion of peace.”
For the first time, former
Presidents, Richard Nixon,
Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter
get together - albeit for the grime
occasion of attending President
Sadat’s funeral. They chatted
together frequently during the long
flight.
The Senate votes to deregulate the
$100 billion-a-year
telecommunications industry. One
Senator commented, “We’ve begun
the dismantling of the overall
monopoly position that AT&T has enjoyed since 1934.”
Banks across the U.S. lower their prime lending rate to 19%. An analyst said
“There’s no question that it has got to come down further... the prime rate should
fall at least to 18%.”
Pathologists identify the body buried in Lee Oswald’s grave as the assassin’s -
ending 18 years of speculation and court battles - disproving a theory that
President Kennedy was killed by a Soviet agent who assumed Oswald’s identity.
Sears, Roebuck & Co. agrees to buy the brokerage firm of Dean Witter Reynolds
for $607 million. Earlier this week, Sears agreed to buy a nationwide real-estate
sales network.

In North Carolina - an angry man shoots and kills his wife and daughter. He said
he got mad because his wife had cooked pork chops, which he can’t eat because
he doesn’t have any teeth. He told the police she didn’t cook anything he could
eat.
British authorities revoke the license of two of Playboy’s biggest casinos their.
Authorities say that the casinos illegally extended credit to high rolling gamblers.
Costs of $166,200 were also levied.
The U.S. Postal Service says it will raise the price of a first-class stamp from 18
cents to 20 cents beginning November 1.
Passing - Gloria Grahame (51) - Academy Award
winning actress. Best known for her appearance in
“It’s A Wonderful Life.” Of breast cancer. She left
the film industry in 1955 for 15 years to have a
child.
“The Johnny Carson Show’ is broadcast in Britain
for the first time. Most reviews were either negative
or lukewarm. From the Times of London - “Johnny
go home’ ... From London Weekend Television - “I
don’t know what the rest of you were watching, but you should be grateful.” The
first show was an hour-long selection of past programs and aired by commercial
ITN.
Good Magazine chooses President Reagan on top - on their list of the 10 most
admired men. Others on the list - Anwar Sadat, Alan Alda, Poe John Paul II, Billy
Graham, Bob Hope, Phil Donahue, Walter Cronkite, Prince Charles and the Rev.
Jerry Falwell.
In sports - Terry Bradshaw throws for 276 yards as the
Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the New Orleans Saints 20-6. He
completed 19 of 28 passes.
