Unemployment slips to 5.8% - the lowest since 1979.
The Democratic-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee sends Robert H. Bork’s
Supreme Court nomination to the Senate floor with a recommendation that he be
rejected.
The Dow loses 91 points - the biggest loss ever in a day (so far). It was due to
jitters in the bond market.
The House votes to establish the Jimmy Carter National Historic site and
Preservation district in Plains, GA - his home.
Dr. W. Eugene Mayberry and Woodrow Myers Jr. - the two top members of
President Reagan’s controversial AIDS commission, quit after complaining about
internal turmoil and lack of Reagan Administration support.
U.S. military helicopters sink three Iranian patrol boats in the northern Persian
Gulf after they fired on an unarmed U.S. navy observation helicopter.
The Rev. Jerry Falwell and his board of directors
resign from the beleaguered PTL. He was asked to
assume control of PTL by founder James Bakker, who
announced that he had sex with a church secretary,
Jessica Hahn in 1980 and arranged to pay her money
to keep the encounter quiet. Amid later disclosures of
lavish salaries and bonuses given he and his wife,
Tammy Faye Bakker, the Assemblies of God removed
Bakker’s ministerial credentials in May for misconduct,
including alleged bisexual activities. Falwell believes Bakker will soon return.
Robert H. Bork refuses to abandon his hopeless campaign to win approval in the
Senate - saying, “I harbor no illusions” about his chances of being confirmed to
the Supreme Court.
Former Ms. American Bess Myerson is indicted on federal
conspiracy and mail fraud charges for allegedly giving a city
job to the daughter of a judge to influence her companion’s
divorce case.

Vice President George Bush apologizes for a remark suggesting that the
expertise of Soviet military tank mechanics would be welcomed by U.S.
automakers in Detroit. “I wish I’d never said it.” Bush said his comment, made in
off-the-cuff remakes to reporters was meant to be humorous “but it’s not coming
out right… so, hey, give me a break. I didn’t mean anything by it.”
Hertz - the nation’s largest car rental firm will be sold to a group that includes
Hertz management and Ford Motor Co. Price is $1.3 billion.
Passing - Clare Boothe Luce - author,
playwright, former congresswoman and
ambassador. She was 84. Widow of Henry R.
Luce, founder of the Time-Life publishing empire.
Sports - Davey Johnson of the New York Mets
and Dick Williams of the Seattle Mariners say
they will give up their jobs after the 1988 season.

planned. Sales of their first album - “Please” which featured their huge hit “West
End Girls” took the group by surprise. One of the new album’s highlights is “What
Have I Done To Deserve This” with guest singer Dusty Springfield.
Radio news - Transtar’s new format - “Niche 29” - signs-on with perhaps their
biggest affiliate - KUTE-FM Los Angeles. Paraquat Kelly and Cynthia Fox do
mornings - then the station is connected to the format which is satellite delivered.
Talk radio - Sally Jessy Raphael moves to the ABC radio
from NBC. ABC says she and the new “Tom Snyder Show” will
build the new network. Catch them both evenings. NBC
Talknet personality Neal Meyers moves into Raphael’s 10pm-
1am slot.
