Shake up Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev moves key supporters into the
Communist party’s ruling Politburo and retires four of its longtime members
including Andrei Gromyko.
Mikhail S. Gorbachev, the Soviet Communist party’s
general secretary is elected the nation’s president.
The space shuttle discovery lands back on earth,
cheered-on by a crowd of 400,000.
At Edward Air Force Base - Vice President George Bush
welcomes the spaceship Discovery’s five astronauts,
heralding all as heroes who restored faith in America’s
once pre-eminent space program.
The nation’s unemployment rate in September fell back to July’s level of 5.4%
after rising for two straight months.
President Reagan accuses Democrat Lloyd Bensten of “a cheap shot…
unbecoming a senator of this United States” for criticizing Republican Dan
Quayle for comparing himself to John f. Kennedy during the vice presidential
debate.
The U.S. Census Bureau says the U.S. population on Jan. 1, 1988 was 245.11
million - up 2.3 million from the start of 1987.

Lisa Marie Presley (20) marries musician Danny Keogh (23) at a small service in
Hollywood.
Debuting this week - “Michelob Presents Sunday Night” a new video show. NBC
has committed to 12 shows. Visiting stars will perform with the show’s house

Television news - Robin Givens has not missed
any tapings or rehearsals on “Head of the Class”
despite the strife in her marriage with Mike Tyson.
Reports say that Tyson had gone on a rampage at
the couple’s new Jersey home following comments
made by Givens ad the actress’ made by Givens
and the actress’ mother on ABC’s “20/20.” Tyson

Debuting this week - a new channel from Ted Turner - TNT. It debuts in 17
million homes with “Gone With The Wind” week.
Fox is canceling “The Late Show” after two years. The current host is Ross
