Israeli warplanes bomb and destroy the PLO headquarters in Tunis, killing as
many as 60 people and injuring 100 others in retaliation for the Yom Kippur
slayings of three Israelis in Cyprus.
Soviet leader
Mikhail S. Gorbachev
arrives in France on
his first trip to the West since he took office in March and
said he hoped the visit will help lead to a return to détente.
He was greeted by President Francois Mitterrand when he
arrived to a state welcome.
In Paris - Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev discloses
details of a new three-point Soviet plan for reducing
superpower strategic arsenals by 50% and offers to talk
directly with France and Britain on reducing their
independent nuclear forces.
In face of a bomb threat, the Soviet embassy in Beirut is evacuated. Some 135
people, most of them women, departed in a convoy of four buses and four small
cars.
Islamic Jihad terrorists announce the execution of U.s. Embassy official William
Buckley, but the White House cannot confirm the report.
A policeman is fatally slashed with a machete and 58 other officers are wounded
in London street battles with hundreds of rampaging youths in the racially mixed
Tottenham section of North London
From Cape Canaveral - Atlantis, the newest shuttle, vaults into orbit on a secret
maiden voyage, carrying a crew of five and two jam-proof nuclear-hardened
military communications satellites.

New York City is equipping all classrooms with alcohol-dipped swaps and
providing custodians with rubber gloves to reduce the chances that AIDS will be
spread from infected children, the city‟s schools chancellor says.
California‟s lotto starts this week. Part of the proceeds will help public schools.
Technology -
The FCC refuses to force cellular telephone manufacturers to
include a switch on each phone so customers could use either of the two
competing cellular systems serving a city. The ruling was seen as helping the
first cellular company to establish service n a community keeps its customers
once its competition arrives. Cellular systems are operating in many of the 90
largest communities in the United States.

Starship‟s “We Built This City” has a spoken-
word passage where a deejay touts a local San Francisco
rock station. That‟s the voice of Les Garland, now one of the
programming chiefs at MTV. RCA has supplied special tracks
without Garland‟s voice so local deejays can insert their own
spiels.
The recent farm Aid benefit at the Univ. of Illinois in Champaign raised $10
million. Organizer was Willie Nelson, who hopes mail-in pledges and retail sales
of farm Aid merchandise will bring in much more. Nelson notes that the toll-free
1-800-FARMAID phone lines will remain operational for once year.
Cable WTBS debuts a new video show. “Powerplay” is an hour-long compilation
of the hottest new clips of the week.
Net proceeds of the Dionne Warwick
recording, “That‟s What Friends Are For”
will be donated to a national organization
sponsoring AIDS research, according to
Arista Records. The track, which will
appear on Warwick‟s upcoming LP,
features vocals by Warwick, Stevie
Wonder, Elton John, and Gladys Knight.

Radio news - Howard Stern
is fired from his
afternoon show on WNBC, New York. Stern, who was
making $5,000-a-week, held a press conference with
his agent Don Buchwald, which Stern prefaced by
saying, “I have a reputation for nobody knowing how I
feel. I am genuinely upset over this, mostly because I
didn‟t know it was coming.” “Had I known it was in the
works, I could have sat down with management and
worked things out.” WNBC radio v/p and general
manager John Hayes Jr. said, “Over the course of
time, it became obvious that there were a number of
areas where we disagreed on the direction of his
show.” “There were plenty of opportunities (for Stern)
to understand our position on different elements.”
Stern joined WNBC in August 1982 from WWDC-FM Washington. Asked
whether a listener campaign of any size could reinstate Howard Stern on WNBC,
Hayes said “no.” Stern said his immediate plans include writing a diet book,
possibly to be titled “Dirty Howie.”

“Spenser For Hire” starring Robert Urich, is the first TV series shot entirely in
Boston. The series is based on the suspense novels by popular Boston author
Robert Parker.
Tom Snyder joins KABC-TV Los Angeles as a “special correspondent” for its
non-news programs.
New Fall Season - NBC is on top with a 19.3, beating CBS by 1.9 rating points.
HBO is sticking to its announcement of last May, and will begin scrambling of all
four of its HBO and Cinemax satellite feeds beginning Jan. 15. This will prevent
those with satellite TVRO systems from receiving the signals, but once
scrambled, HBO plans to market its signal to TVRO viewers. HBO will charge
$12.95 for one channel or $19.95 for both.
