Labor Secretary Raymond J. Donovan is indicted by a county
grand jury in New York on charges of grand larceny and false
documentation in connection with a subway construction
project there.
Speaking in Texas, President Reagan charges that a “lynch atmosphere” has
dogged officials of his Administration throughout his term and says he considers
Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan “innocent until proven guilty.”
The Senate kills Civil Rights legislation that would have reversed a Supreme
Court decision narrowing the application of federal anti-discrimination laws.
Debate - President Reagan meets Walter F. Mondale in Louisville as they clash
on domestic issues.
The space shuttle Challenger lifts off from Cape Canaveral and its crew will study
the forces that make life possible on earth.
Almost Assassin John Hinckley Jr . loses a plea for phone
calls and outdoor exercise in the hospital. He told a judge: “I
am getting well. I am not the same person I was two years
ago… a sick young man.”
Campaigning - President Reagan will abandon his
presidential jet Air Force One to make an old-fashioned
whistle-stop train trip on the same railway car that was used
by Harry S. Truman.
Richard Miller, an FBI agent for more than 20 years becomes the first agent ever
accused of espionage and is arrested in California.
The nation’s unemployment rate edges down to 7.4% last month, the lowest
since June.

Catching on - DeLorean car clubs.
There are five such clubs around the
country. Of more than 8.600 DeLoreans
built, about 6,000 of them have been
identified on dealer sales lists, which car
clubs use to solicit members. The
DeLoreans had an original sticker price
of about $26,000.
Sports -
San Diego Padre Steve Garvey hits a homer and 5 RBI’s against his old team -
the Dodges as the Padres win 7-5.
Muhammad Ali’s physician says that the former heavyweight champ’s physical
disorder probably has its roots in the punches he took in the ring. Ali underwent
tests last month at New York’s Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and
apparently, the cause of Ali’s slurred speech and stumbling gait was Parkinson’s
syndrome. Another doctor said Ali was hospitalized at the UCLA Clinics in 1982
‘for very early signs of Parkinsonism,” and was diagnosed as having the disorder
a year ago.

Jeffrey Katzenberg (33) is named president of motion
pictures and television for Walt Disney Productions. He
is currently president of movie production for paramount

Music news -
Actor Leonard Nimoy plays a cab driver in the Bangles video “Going Down To
Liverpool.”
The Justice department has launched a preliminary antitrust investigation of
MTV. Apparently, they are looking into the music channel’s controversial
contracts with five major record companies granting MTV exclusive rights to rock
video clips. Under the terms of its contracts, rock-video clips from the record
companies appear exclusively on MTV for 30 to 60 days before they are
available to other music programs such as NBC’s “Friday Night Videos.” The
contracts cover just over 40% of the videos airing on MTV.

Saturday Night Live begins its 10 th season this week. Back from last year are Jim
Belushi, Mary Gross, Gary Kroeger and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Gone are Eddie
Murphy and Joe Piscopo. Added this year - Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Rich Hall,
Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest and Pamela Stephenson.
CBS wins the overall ratings with a 17.5 rating, compared to NBC at 1 16.1 and
ABC with a 14.5.
Passing - Actor Neil Hamilton (85) best known
as “Commissioner Gorden” in the Batman TV
series.
