The United States will now offer diplomatic recognition
to the soon-to-be independent Ukraine... A few days
later - it’s official - The Ukraine votes to quite the Soviet
Union and its president-elect,
Leonid M. Kravchuk
claims “A new Ukraine has been born. A great
historical event has occurred which will not only
change the history of the Ukraine, but the history of the
world.” He also said the former Soviet republics, and
not the Kremlin, should take collective of the command
of the country’s nuclear arsenal.
American hostage Joseph J. Cicippio, is released after
five years of captivity in Beirut... A short time later - Terry A. Anderson, the last
hostage is freed after six years and nine months.
John Sununu quits as White House chief of staff. A controversial figure since the
early days of the Bush administration, he quit to avoid being a drag on Bush’s
upcoming reelection campaign. There is no immediate announcement of a
replacement.
The Food and Drug Administration makes the controversial drug Tacrine or THA
available to a limited number of Alzheimer’s patients this week. The drug is still
under study.
Charles Keating
(68), whose name has become
associated with greed and excess in the thrift industry, is
convicted on 17 of 18 counts of securities fraud
stemming from the sale of his company’s bonds at
Lincoln Savings and Loan Branches.
Keating faces a minimum of 10
years in prison and a $250 thousand
fine at his sentencing. He remains
free after posting $100 thousand in
bail
Pan American Airways (Pan Am) ceases operations after 64
years of service. It’s the third major air carrier to fold this year
- after Eastern and Midway. Said Pan Am President Russell
Ray Jr. - “Today, we will see the end of an airline whose
name will be forever forged in American History.”

Robert Pilatus
(27) - half the disgraced pop music duo
Milli-Vanilli - tries to commit suicide by slashing his wrist
and gulping prescription pills and then dangled himself
from a ninth floor hotel balcony on the Sunset Strip.
“They’ve harassed my family ... I’ve had enough. I didn’t
want to hurt anyone.” Pilatus was taken to Cedars-Sinai
Medical Center and placed under 72-hour observation.
Passing - actor Ralph Bellamy (87). His film, stage,
radio and television career spanned more than 60
years. He last appeared in the movie “Pretty Woman.”
White supremacist Tom Metzger is sentenced to six months in jail for a cross-
burning in 1983.
Bryant Gumbel renews his “Today” show contract for three more years.
It’s a new son for actor Robin Williams and wife Marsha.
Rhino Records releases a 9 CD set entitled “The History Of British Rock.” You
can purchase them individually or as a set. The collection salutes more than 100
British rock hits from the 60’s with such acts as The Kinks, Sandi Shaw, Gerry &
The Pacemakers, Petula Clark, The Bee Gees and a ton more.
Izzy Stradlin
- rhythm guitarist with Guns N Roses,
leaves the band. In a statement from Geffen Records -
lead singer Axl Rose said - “Izzy and I have been
together 15 years so it’s kind of a shock to my system.”
In London - Freddie Mercury - the lead singer of Queen,
is cremated in a ceremony led by white-robed priests of
the Zorastrain faith. Flowers sent from all over the world
covered a quarter-acre and were distributed to AIDS
patients. Mercury (45) died last Sunday of AIDS.
