Surgeons replace the dying heart of a dentist and replace it with the first
permanent artificial heart this week. The historic operation was conducted at the
University of Utah in Salt Lake City. If successful, the operation would mean that
dentist Barney Clark would have to be connected for the rest of his life by two
tubes to an external air compressor.
President
Belisario Betancur
of Columbia criticizes
President Reagan’s Latin America policies in a face-to-
face encounter, demanding he alter some of risky
economic and political positions. In an after lunch toast,
Betancur forcefully urged that Reagan join in a “new
social alliance,” that he liberalize U.S. trade and financial
policies and that he stop opposing Cuban participation in
the inter-American system. He also complained about
massive spending for arms by developed countries.
President Reagan is in the area as part of a five - day
Latin American tour.
Tylenol is back on store shelves this week - now in triple-sealed tamper resistant
packages. All stores should be stocked by January 1st. Parent Johnson &
Johnson says consumer response to discount coupons “has been very good.”
Kevin John Masterson - who surrendered to the FBI for questioning in the Tylenol
poisoning, goes berserk when jailed inmates accused him of the killings.
Authorities say he smashed the commode in his cell and smeared defecation on
the walls.
Sportscaster
Vin Scully
signs a multiyear contract NBC that
will pay him $1 million a year. The contract calls for Scully to
do play-by-play on 28 Game-of-the-week baseball telecasts
and do all nine innings on NBC’s coverage of World Series,
playoff and All-Star games. He’ll also do golf coverage. Joe
Garagiola, the network’s former #1 announcer is signed as
the network’s No 1 commentator and will work with Scully.
Garagiola was compensated for stepping down. Tony Kubek,
who has been NBC’s No 1 baseball commentator, is demoted to the No 2 team
with he and Bob Costas compensated financially.
Herschel Walker
of top-rated Georgia wins the Heisman
Trophy, winning easily over Stanford quarterback John Elway
and SMU tailback Erick Dickerson.

Robert Coote
noted “My Fair Lady”
actor. He was 73. He spent most of his professional life
working on Broadway, but it was the role of Col Pickerung in
the musical that brought him the most acclaim. He was with
“My Fair Lady” from its start on Broadway in 1956.
Marries - Actor Ralph Waite, who portrayed the father in
“The Waltons” to interior designer Linda East in Palm
Springs.

Benny Goodman are among five who receive Kennedy
Center Honors. The others are Broadway, producer,
director and writer George Abbot and conductor laureate of
the Philadelphia orchestra Eugene Ormandy.

Angels, signs a four-year contract with the Yankees for $3.7
million.

“The explosions were much larger than anyone
expected and said the explosion that crippled the
helicopter was not supposed to take place. He denied
another crewmember’s allegation that he ordered the
helicopter lower and lower. He said he didn’t even
have a walkie-talkie and “I was not in radio
communication with the helicopter during the shot.
Even if I had been, they could not have heard me
anyway.”
Dies - British comic
Marty Feldman
(48) while
finishing a new motion picture in Mexico City. Feldman
collapsed and died in his hotel room shortly after
returning from the set of “Yellowbeard” - a pirate put-
on movie... Later in the week, Marty Feldman is
eulogized at services tinged with laughter and jazz
music - then he was buried in Hollywood near the
graves of Stan Laurel and Buster Keaton (two of his
favorites).
Howard Cosell
, disgusted by the
state of boxing, says he’ll be no part
of any pro-fight broadcast. “I love amateur boxing and if the
company wants me to (ABC), I would do Olympic boxing. But
professional, no. I have walked away from it. I am past the
point where I want to be part of it. I don’t want to be a party to
the hypocrisy, the sleaziness. I’m worn out by it.” Cosell was
outraged last week while covering the heavyweight title fight in
which champion Larry Holmes battered Randy (Tex) Cobb for
15 rounds. He kept telling his audience that he couldn’t believe the fight wasn’t
being stopped.
At Rockefeller Center in Manhattan - David Rockefeller, chairman of the center,
lights a 70-foot Norwegian spruce Christmas tree. Also with him - Bob Hope,
Merlin Olson and actress Sandy Duncan.
