Stuns Britain - Margaret Thatcher who never lost an
election, steps down as prime minister. A challenge by
her party’s Michael Heseltine had left her seriously
wounded. She had been prime minister longer than
any other British leader in this century.
John Major (47) is selected as
Britain’s next prime minister.
The U.N. Security Council authorizes
war to oust Iraq from Kuwait, giving
them until January 15.
In Geneva, President Bush proclaims he will work closely with
any country willing to appose Iraq. The President met with President Hafez
Assad of Syria, a country the Bush Administration has labeled a major supporter
of international terrorism.
Building forces as the U.S. sends 300 more warplanes to the Persian Gulf for
possible offensive action.
Medical - A federal study finds more people in the United States died in 1988
than in any one year on record as deaths caused by AIDS, homicide and
influenza rose while mortality from heart disease, stroke and cancer declined.
During the one-year period, there was a 20% increase in the death rate for AIDS,
8% increase for pneumonia and influenza. Death from heart disease was down
1.9%.
Largest takeover of U.S. company - Matsushita of Japan will buy MCA for about
$6.59 billion in cash.
Passing - David White , best known for his role as Larry
Tate on the long-running “Bewitched” TV series.

on a consumer fraud lawsuit against Milli Vanilli.
The station sponsored one of their concerts last
spring. They seek $200 damages for each person
attending the concert.
MTV says it will not be airing Madonna’s latest hit -
“Justify My Love”. The video shows explicit scenes
of Madonna in bed with her boyfriend, Tony Ward.
This weekend, MTV kicks off a reunion of its first VJ’s - Alan Hunter, Mark
Goodman, Nina Blackwood, J.J. Jackson and Martha Quinn.
Marry - Mick Jagger to his longtime girlfriend, Jerry Hall.
When it rains, it pours - Rob Pilatus of Milli Vanilli is arrested
for investigation of sexual battery in Los Angeles. His alleged
victim is a 25-year-old woman. The national Academy of
Recording Arts and Sciences stripped Pilatus and partner
Fabrice Morvan of their 1989 Grammy as best new artist after
it was revealed they did not sing on their hit “Girl You Know
It’s True.”
Milli Vanilli related - Two lawmakers in Massachusetts file a
bill to prevent singing groups from giving lip-sync
performances unless the audience is told.
