The Federal Reserve Board lowers the interest rate it charges banks and other
financial institutions from 9% to 8.5%
A Soviet defector who ran across the demarcation line between North and South
Korea - sets off an exchange of gunfire, killing at least two Communist
northerners, one South Korean and wounding a U.S. Army private.
After a 17-year break - President Reagan resumes diplomatic ties with Iraq, to
take effect immediately. A senior Administration official said the move was not
aimed at Iran, with which Iraq has been fighting a four-year war. “In fact, we are
prepared today to discuss an improvement in relations with Iran if it ceases its
support for international terrorism.”
For the second time in history - an artificial heart is successfully implanted - this
time to William Schroeder (52) of Jasper Indiana. So far the patient is doing well.
Sen. Robert Dole of Kansas is elected Senate
majority leader, defeating Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.
Dole said - “I get along well with the President” and
noting he share’s the President’s view that tax
increases should be used only as a last resort to
reduce the deficit.
Can’t drive 55 - A federal panel urges to keep the
national 55m.p.h. speed limit, saying it is one of the
most effective highway safety policies ever adopted.
A research council says that public support for the
speed limit has declined and violations by motorists are increasing. Much of the
opposition to the limit has come from rural Western states with its long stretch of
lonely highways. Some members of the review panel are favoring raising the
speed limit on such rural highways.
Capitol Air suspends all flights and its
director’s meet to reorganize the airline. The
carrier hopes to resume service in time for
the Christmas and New Years holiday
season.

About 1,500 show-up in Las Vegas to bid on thousands of toys, gadgets and
memorabilia belonging to actor Steve McQueen, who died in 1980. One of the
first items to go was a firefighter’s hat he wore in “The Towering Inferno” which
went for $1,900.
President Reagan’s son Michael asks the First Lady to apologize for saying he
has been estranged from his father for three years. The feud began after First
Lady Nancy made the remark in a published newsletter. “I feel like somebody
knocked the air out of me ... Nancy is the type of person who is very beholden to
my father through all the years. Sometimes she doesn’t understand that
everybody doesn’t line up like a duck.” Aside from an occasional “squabble-type
thing,” the younger Reagan says he feels no estrangement from his father.

Actor Gary Coleman (16) is released from the
hospital after undergoing a kidney transplant
November 10th. The “Diff’rent Strokes” star is
expected to continue his recovery for a few months
before returning to filming. It’s his second kidney
transplant.

MTV Networks agrees to pay $1 million for “certain assets” of its competitor -
Turner Broadcasting’s Cable Music Television channel - which goes off the air
this week. Turner’s channel has only been on the air a month. The agreement
also calls for MTV to purchase $500 thousand of advertising time on other Turner
networks. MTV, launched in 1981, can now be seen in 24.2 million homes.
