where they heard the
minister declare the
spirit of freedom will
never be extinguished
by Russian “tyranny or
tanks.”
Soviet Deputy Prime Minister V.M Molotov is appointed Minster of State Control.
In Washington though, they think Molotov, an old-time Stalinist - was actually
demoted.
The XVIth Olympiad opens in
Melbourne, Australia as bright
sunshine replaces rain. More than
110,000 people packed Melbourne
Cricket Ground. In addition,
hundreds of thousands line city
streets to salute the Duke of
Edinburgh in the opening
ceremonies.
It was four months ago that
Egyptian Dictator Nasser seized the
Suez Canal, bringing about a crisis
in the area. The canal remains closed - with ships having to take the long way
around the Cape of Good Hope. Gas rationing is in force around Britain and the
rest of Europe and losses continue.
In Toledo - Elvis Presley and 22 year-old Lewis Ballint get into a brawl, with
police arresting Ballint. Says Presley; “This guy walks up to me and says you
*%#@, my wife carries a picture of you in her wallet, but doesn’t carry one of me
- lets step outside.” The singer was sitting at a table with his manager and others

at the Shalimar Room of the Commodore Perry Hotel. Presley says he doesn’t
want to press charges. Later, a judge sentences Ballint to a $10 fine and $9.60 in
costs, plus he is sent to a workhouse to serve seven days. Nobody was hurt in
the fight.

Tommy Dorsey
(51) dies under mysterious
circumstances at his home in Greenwich, CT.A medical
examiner says Dorsey suffocated after becoming
nauseated from something he had eaten or drunk -
“personally, I don’t think he committed suicide.” ... Later the
examiner officially said the entertainer choked to death
accidentally. Dorsey’s ABC-TV was the first network show
to book Elvis Presley earlier this year.
Actor Gyllyn Ford legally changes his name to Glenn Ford.
He had been using the name professionally since 1939.
The American Cancer Society says that while cigarettes are a health hazard - the
final effect of smoking lies with the individual. In their pamphlet, “Were We Stand
Today” published this week - “The American Cancer Society has no plans for a
campaign against cigarette smoking ... the final decision on whether to smoke
cigarettes rests with the individual who will probably make up his mind in
consultation with his doctor.”

Italian Count Alberto Mochi. “He called me a 2am from
Rome - woke up the whole household. He wants me to
give up my career, he said he has plenty of money and I

give up my career when it’s just getting started?”

(66) is
named Grand Marshall to the Tournament of Roses Parade
in Pasadena, CA. Rickenbacker, a WW1 hero, is chairman of
the board of directors of Eastern Air Lines.
Dore Shary has his contract terminated as production head
of MGM in a shake-up. Schary had been associated with the
studio since 1948.

ABC and
Frank Sinatra
sign a 3-year deal. ABC
doesn’t say how much they’ll pay the singer, but the did
agree to a heavy investment in Kent Productions -
owned by Sinatra.
Films of the Olympics from Australia are being shown on
U.S. television in certain markets. It takes a few days
though - the film has to be processed in Los Angeles
before it gets shipped out to stations.
Desilu will produce its second series for National Telefilms Associates for its 112
stations. The series is “Official Detective.”.
The FCC sets a February 15 deadline for the holders of 83 UHF television
construction permits to explain why they are not on the air. To the FCC, it
appears that they have made a “voluntary decision to postpone construction” of
their stations. UHF stations are for the most part, losing money and the
commission hasn’t acted on the problem. Most television receivers don’t include
UHF channels.
