The nation’s worst rail disaster in years
... A rear-end collision between two Long
Island passenger trains jammed with
Thanksgiving Eve commuters, kills an
estimated 78 persons. More than 132 are
injured. It happened when two trains
leaving New York City began rolling
through Queens. The forward train made
an emergency stop, with the second train
crashing into it.
Korean War news - American troops reach the Manchurian frontier and capture
the Yalu River city of Hyesanjin. A tank-led spearhead of the U.S.. 7th Division
forged northward in bitter weather and took up positions directly opposite
Communist China.
In California, senate-elect Richard Nixon takes his post early, as a result of the
resignation of retiring Democratic Sen. Sheridan Downey

In Kansas City, surgeons remove a
sprouting sunflower seed from a two-
year-old Patricia Fredelake. An
illuminated bronchoscope clearly showed
the seed with several healthy sprouts,
one of them a half-inch long, lodged in the lower lobe of the child’s lung. They
discovered the girl’s condition in a recurrence of pneumonia symptoms.
Actress Katharine Hepburn backs into a courtroom stove while making a speech
to a judge in Oklahoma, and singes her mink coat. She was there to lend a hand
to her chauffeur - who was caught speeding.

Jean Simmons
just wanted to show-off her
big diamond engagement ring given to her from actor Stewart
Granger. Trouble is, she was assessed $8,400 in duty and
purchased taxes for bringing the ring into the country (it was
given to her in the states). Jean posed for photographers as
she left the plane at London airport, showing off the ring and
smiling. But when she left the customs shed, she didn’t have
the ring. “They’ve taken it way from em. They say I have to pay
purchase tax and duty of 3000 pounds. I’ll be able to get it
back tomorrow when I have the money. I feel very upset about because I was
hoping to be able to show it to everybody.”
Sales of the mineral cobalt, a steel-hardening agent important in making
magnetized parts of radio and TV sets is reduced temporarily because of very
high defense demands. The volume has been reduced to 30% of what it was at
the beginning of the year. A drop of 25 to 40% in the current output rate of
television and radio sets after New Year’s is forecast
Radio news - a new national radio network debuts - the Progressive
Broadcasting System (PBS). The network will feed 12 hours of programming
daily. A three-hour dedication program airs on the network and features a long
list of stars including Bob Hope, Eddy Arnold, Connie Haines, Spike Jones,
Frankie Laine, Carmen Miranda, Mel Torme and Jimmy Wakely.
Walt Disney is planning yet another animated feature film - “Sleeping Beauty.”
The studio is getting ready to release “Alice in Wonderland” and is starting on
“Peter Pan.”

Radio station WRC in Washington,
DC auctions off a $525 television with
one catch. The buyer would be the
person who can pay off with the most
Confederate bills. The auction wound
up with more than $21,000 in
confederate money
.
Edgar Bergen and his pal-dummy,
Charlie McCarthy debut on television
this week.
In New York City - CBS tests color
broadcasts over WCBS-TV (channel 2), with their #1 television performer Arthur
Godfrey. The star appeared in a Hawaiian setting, wearing a lei of red carnations
and an open-neck blue sports shirt. Godfrey’s brick-red hair was slicked down
and
looked
black.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz
say they
will begin casting their new TV show this
week. The format will be a situation
comedy with a husband and wife, to be
filmed for national release. They’re still
scouting for a studio. Ms Ball says the
original deal will include three programs.
They’ll be offered to Lucy’s Saturday night
sponsor and the CBS network, under
terms of her present contract. If the show
is turned down, Lucy and Desi say they
will peddle the package themselves.
