President Reagan , warming up in the studio for his radio
address, didn’t know he was connected to the press room
when he made this ad-lib in what he thought was a totally
dead mike: “My fellow Americans. I’ve talked to you on a
number of occasions about the economic problems and
opportunities our nation faces. And I am prepared to tell you,
it’s a hell of a mess.”
The Soviet Union says that President Reagan’s planned
deployment of the new MX missile would violate basic
provisions of strategic arms agreements and if they were carried out, Moscow
would strengthen its own defenses. “Washington cannot but know that this runs
counter to one of the central provisions of the SALT 1 and SALT II accords: an
obligation not to crate additional silos for intercontinental missiles.”
On “Meet The Press” - Martin Feidstein, chairman of the Council for Economic
Advisers forecasts a deficit between $150 and $200 billion in fiscal 1984 and
urged cutbacks in government spending. The projected deficit would be the
largest ever.
President Reagan announces his support for a 5 cents-per-gallon tax to help pay
for repair of U.S. highways. That would average to $30 a year for the average
motorist.
The Hawaiian Islands are battered by their first hurricane in 23 years as Iowa
carried gusts up to 110 mph. One sailor died and others are injured as the guided
missile destroyer “Goldsborough” steamed out of Pearl Harbor in the storm.
The Federal Reserve cuts the basic lending rate to 9% from 9.5% - a four year
low.
Johnson & Johnson begins a $50 million dollar
newspaper blitz, containing a $2.50 coupon toward
the purchase of any kind of Tylenol. It’s an action
intended to boost sails of the ailing pain reliever
after the cyanide scare in Chicago, which killed
seven persons.
The state of Texas bands the sale of “Rock and
Roll” brand beer. Each can displays a picture of
fictitious Johnny Longshot proclaiming “I sold my

soul for Rock & Roll.” The commission says the claim can’t be proven.
The Boston Herald American reports that Senator Edward Kennedy and wife
Joan are in the process of obtaining a divorce, agreeing on a final divorce
settlement of under which she would receive $4 million.

Music news -
Video games meet rock ‘n’ roll in January with the release of “Journey’s Escape,”
a tie-in between the band and Data Age, a fledgling games software firm. The
Atari-compatible cartridge listing at $34.95 will be supported by a multi-million
dollar ad campaign.
The IRS label has developed its own hour-long television series for MTV called
“The IRS Show.” The program will couple performances and artist interview with
segments on such related topics as regional music scenes and industry news.
It’s already aired once.

CBS is seeking to block sales of MCA’s storybook album of “E.T. - The
Extraterrestrial” featuring narration and vocal performance by Michael Jackson -
an Epic artist. CBS claims that MCA interfered with its contractual relationship
with Jackson, noting that while the artist was allowed to record a song
(“Someone in the Dark”) for inclusion in the “E.T.” Storybook, this was on
condition that the package not be marketed before Christmas and that Jackson’s
performance not be released as a single.
Radio news -
ABC Talkradio now has 44 affiliates. The latest include WIND Chicago and
WFAA Dallas.
KOST Los Angeles names Jhani Kaye as program director as the beautiful music
station makes the switch to adult contemporary this week.
