President Reagan says he has “absolutely no plans” to send more arms to Iran.”
Philippine President
Corazon Aquino
declares that she is
“ready to lead the war against the nation’s Communist
Insurgency as her government prepares to abandon efforts
to negotiate a nationwide cease-fire with leaders of the 17-
year rebellion.
President Reagan takes personal responsibility for his
Administration’s secret shipment of arms to Iran but insists
that the operation had not been a mistake.
The Soviet Union will unveil a new law this week allowing limited forms of small
private enterprise similar to those permitted, then banned in the 1920’s. The new
law is expected to provide a legal framework for million of individual repairmen
and craftsmen who now moonlight illicitly from their regular jobs.

Robert
McFarlane says arms shipments to Iran turned out to be
“a mistake” and takes responsibility for the failure to
anticipate harsh public and diplomatic reaction to the
secret operation.

Adm. William Crowe Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff call on President Reagan to fire national security adviser Jon M.
Poindexter for approving the shipment of U.S. arms to Iran to help free American
hostages.
Philippine President Corazon Aquino announces that he has asked her entire
Cabinet to resign, but so far, has accepted one resignation.
Eastman Kodak Co becomes the fifth major U.S. corporation in three months to
withdraw from South Africa and the first to pull its products from the marketplace
in that nation. Kodak blamed South African racial policies and a slow-down of the
nation’s economy for the withdrawal.
In Manhattan - 600 yellow taxis flood two main routes into the borough, clogging
rush hour traffic and converging on City Hall to protest the city’s refusal to grant a
fare increase. Mayor Edward Koch called the threat by protest organizers to
stage other strikes “yellowmail.”

The new federal tax package will reduce deductions on personal credit interest -
including charge cards, personal loans and time payments over the next five
years. Currently, such interest is 100% deductible. Here is the table…

- AT&T proposes a long-distance rate
cut averaging 8.1% as of January 1. The new rates were spurred in part by a
federal government order to cut the profit margin for the company’s interstate
business from 12.75% to 12.2% effective the first of the year.
Medical -
Doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital announce the first successful
implant of a new insulin pump, a device they say could help the 1-million insulin-
dependent diabetics in the United States.

Taft Broadcasting say it has agreed to sell five non-affiliated
(independent) TV stations to TVX Broadcasting Group for $240 million in cash.
The stations are - WTAF- Philadelphia, WCIX-Miami, KTXA-Dallas, KTXH-
Houston and WDCA-Washington. All are UHF stations.

ratings. KIIS-FM is playing 11-song sweeps with
“more variety, less repetition.”

Entertainment news -
The parents of “Dallas” star Patrick Duffy are
shot to death in an apparent robbery attempt at a
bar they owned in Montana. Police identified the
victims as Terence and Marie Duffy, both in their
60’s. Arrested were two Helena men - Sean
Wentz and Ken Miller, both 19. One had blood
all over him when arrested, along with a
shotgun. The pair was arrested after stealing a
truck and leading police in a high-speed chase.
The bar was called “The Lounge” and located in Boulder, Montana.
Newsman Jim Lehrer of PBS is also a playwright and his first - “Chili Queen”
debuts in New York this week.
Dick Clark Productions hopes to raise $16 million with a proposed IPO.
Passing - character actor Alan Hewitt (71) who also directed in stage, movies
and television. Best known as “Detective Brennan” in the 1960’s sitcom “My
Favorite Martian.”

Music news -
L.A. music scene - Madam Wong’s West, one of the
breeding grounds for West Coast rock bands is going away.
Owner Esther Wong, whose Madame Wong’s Chinatown-
based club also supported the rock scene, says she’s had it.
“I just thing the club scene is burning out… I really miss the days when the
Plimsouls and the Motels were here all the time. But those days are gone.” Wong
was instrumental for supporting bands such as Oingo Boingo, the Knack, the Go-
Go’s and many others, before they had record deals.
Everyone is scared of digital? Senate sponsors fail in the last days of the
Congress to pass a stopgap item to halt early 1987 importation of digital
audiotape (DAT) cassette machines. S.2842 introduced in late September by
Sen. John Danforth (R-MO), would have placed a prohibitive duty of 35% on DAT
machines that are not equipped with anti-copying chips and a 4.1% tariff rate on
DAT machines with the chips.

Live Aid’s Bob Geldof, who was once
lead of the Boomtown Rats, has his first
solo album out with “Deep in the Heart of
Nowhere.” Geldof’s contributions to
famine crusade - particularly highlighted
by heading Live Aid, made this a much-
anticipated album. After all, he’s been out
of the studio for about two years. Many
are asking - will Geldof’s stature as a
musician equal his standing as a
humanitarian? Here in this country, “The
Boomtown Rats were thought of as brash
and lacking revolutionary spirit of the
punk music scene.
Seen on MTV an anti-drug spots. One features former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve
Jones saying - “A good friend of mine, Sid Vicious, died of drugs. I nearly died
from drugs. Drugs suck…”
Compact Disc update - CBS Records predicts that domestic manufacturing
capacity for compact disks will catch up with demand sometime in 1987, leading
to price reduction pressures and greater label attention to catalog fill.
It’s Bruce mania - “Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Live/1975-1985”
becomes the first album in more than 10 years - and the fourth in rock history -
to debut at No. 1 on the national charts. Bruce is everywhere. FM rock stations
are playing a ton of cuts from the collection.
Madonna has collaborated with producer Stephen Bray
on the debut single by a new Sire (Records) artist -
Nick
Kamen.
Look for “Each Time You Break My Heart”
soon. Madonna is making another movie - she’ll star in
the upcoming Warner Bros. Movie “Slammer.”

Bill Moyers says he is returning to public television.
