raid on their Jesuit-run university campus by gunmen in military uniform.

50,000 Bulgarians assemble on the steps of a church to celebrate a new

government and appeal for greater freedom.

More East bloc (Czechoslovakia) - Demand reforms - More than 20,000 march

through the streets of Prague before riot police break-up the demonstrations.

In Washington - Polish solidarity leader Lech

Walesa calls on America to offer a new “Marshall

Plan” to help rebuild the ailing economies of Eastern

Europe.

Increased minimum wage - President Bush signs a

bill that will raise the minimum wage to $4.25 an hour

from $3.35 an hour by the spring of 1991.

Sports - Dexter Manley of the Washington Redskins

becomes the third player suspended for life under

the NFL’s drug abuse policy.

Pitcher Bret Saberhagen of the Kansas City Royals

gets his second American League Cy Young Award.

Last year, he went 23-6.

Music news - Graham Nash will make his debut as a

talk host on cable’s Arts & Entertainment channel.

Graham will host a series of programs titled “The Ring.”

The debut program (Dec. 17) has Graham interviewing

Grace Slick with appearances by Steve Garvey, Bonnie

Raitt, Suzie Chaffee and Lamont Dozier.

Bruce Springsteen has told his E-street band members they are free to pursue

outside projects.

Grateful Dean fans - Do you have your DTV? It’s a show for Deadheads, made

by Deadheads. The monthly half-hour program is now on 25 different cable

systems.

“New Kids On The Block” are hot. They have two simultaneous hits in the top-10

now with “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind)” and “Hangin’ Tough.’

Rap - Tommy Boy Records releases its first long form music video, “Monster TV

Rap Hits.” It has sold more than 12,000 copies so far and features Rob Base &

DJ E-Z Rock, De la Soul, 2 Live Crew, M.C. Hammer and Easy-E. The tape is

about an hour.

Milli Vanilli becomes the first duo or

group to land three #1 hits from a debut

album. What are they you ask? They are

”Baby Don’t Forget My Number,” “Girl

You Know It’s True” and “Girl I’m Gonna

Miss You.”

Television news -

“The Comedy Channel” - Home Box

Offices launches a new 24-hour comedy

channel. Seen on the channel - Tommy

Sledge and other comedy hosts Rachel

Sweet, Allen Havey, Joel Hodgson,

Steve Higgins, Dave Higgins and Dave Allen. HBO has invested about $75

million in the channel. But wait, rival Viacom is set to launch “Ha!” in the spring.

Passing - Johnny Haymer - a familiar face on “Mash.” He

was 69… of cancer.

Roseanne Barr appears on David Letterman, while

“Roseanne” co-star John Goodman hosts “Saturday Night

Live” with k.d. Lang as musical guest.

A federal appeals court clears the way for restoration of rules

designed to prevent cable TV systems from showing

syndicated programs that local TV stations also might be

showing. That means if a local station is showing

“Superman” - the cable TV carrier may have to block the

signal of a superstition carrying the same program.

News re-creations should not be part of news division - NBC news says it’s

dropping “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow” - a show that re-creates news events.

The show is co-hosted by Maria Shriver, Chuck Scarborough and Mary Alice.

Instead, the show will be part of NBC’s entertainment division and will continue to

use news re-creations, which have been under heavy fire.
