Week of November 15, 1956
The U.N. Middle East police force flies its first units to the Suez Canal zone. They
were sped on their way from Italy by a mounting threat of intervention by Soviet
“volunteers” in invaded Egypt.
President Tito
blasts Russia and blames them for the
Hungarian revolt and declares it was “a fatal error” to use
Soviet Troops to bring Hungary to heel.
Russia is massing armored forces on the Yugoslav
boarder and passing the word to neighboring satellites that
President Tito is to blame for the upsurge of anti-Soviet
sentiment in East Europe.
Secretary of State Dulles accuses the Soviet rulers of waging war against
Hungary with “promiscuous slaughter” and trying to substitute them for the United
Nations in the Middle East. Meantime Budapest radio reports Hungarian
guerrillas are battling reinforcements Russia is pouring into the revolt-torn
country.
Acting Secretary of State Herbert Hoover Jr. warns the Soviet Union to keep its
“volunteers” out of the Middle East or face U.N. opposition backed by U.S.
power.
Egypt protests against a British-French plan to begin clearing sunken ships from
the blocked Suez Canal. The new objections were raised soon after Dag
Hamarskjold, U.N. Secretary General, opened his talks with President Nasser on
how the U.N. police force may be deployed.

resigns as Ambassador to Italy,
asking President Eisenhower to relieve her of her duties ‘at
the earliest convenient moment.”
Sports - New York Yankee Mickey Mantle who won the
American League’s triple batting crown, is unanimously
named the most valuable player in the league. He led with a
.353 batting average, 52 home runs and 130 RBI’s.

Entertainment news -
Liberace and Elvis Presley stage an impromptu act after Liberace’s nightclub
appearance at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Presley was in the audience as
Liberace went through his performance. After the show, Elvis went to Liberace’s
dressing room where the latter exchanged his gold-sequined jacket for Presley’s
striped sports coat. Elvis sat down at the piano Liberace picked up a guitar and in
no time at all a rock ‘n’ roll session was underway.
Elizabeth Taylor
files suit for divorce to end her second
marriage. She charges extreme cruelty of her actor-husband
Michael Wilding
and seeks custody of the couple’s two children,
Michael (3 ½) and Christopher (1 ½).
Television news -
“
Ding Dong School
” will be dropped by NBC at the end of
the year. Also being dropped is “Bandstand.” A new
audience participation show “Price is Right” will replace
“Bandstand” on November 26. Dr. Frances Horwich, who
created, produces and appears in “Ding Dong School”, will
retain her title as supervisor of children’s programs for NBC.
Three Thanksgiving Day parades will be televised by NBC
and ABC:
The Macy’s parade will be covered by NBC from 11 to noon
and will feature Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Spike Jones, Paul
Winchell and Jerry Mahoney, Buster Crabbe and the
Broadway cast of “Li’l Abner.”
ABC will broadcast Detroit’s Thanksgiving parade from
10:15a to 11a.
Bamberger’s annual parade in Newark will be televised by ABC on Wednesday
from 7 to 7:30pm.

WINS (New York) DJ Alan Freed’s first movie “Rock, Rock Rock” will be
simultaneously launched in 70 New York theaters December 5. In addition to
owning 10% of the film, Freed plays a leading role and publishes 15 songs from
the 21-tune picture. In addition to WINS, Freed is heard in Europe on Radio
Luxembourg (
see ad above)
and has yet another movie pending.

Walt Disney Studios appoints conductor
Tutti Camarata
as
music director of the firm. He’ll be busy as Disneyland Records
has a ton of projects coming up. Additional albums planned
include soundtrack music from previous and upcoming Disney
theatrical movies, among them “Cinderella,” “Bambi,” “Snow
White,” “Secrets of Life,” “Westward Ho the Wagons,” “Johnny
Tremaine,” “Sleeping Beauty” and a deluxe 3-album set from
“Fantasia.”
Talent line-up on the soundtrack album includes Laverne Baker, Chuck Berry,
the Three Chuckles, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, the Flamingos, the
Moonglows, Johnny Burnette Trio, Jimmy Cavallo and His House Rockers, Cirino
and the Bowties, Ivy Schulman and Alan Freed Orchestra.

More than 9 million
teenagers
throughout the
United States buy their own phonograph
records and many other items, according to a
study of the market by the Bureau of
Advertising of the American Newspaper
Publisher’s Association. Some 16 million teens
have some $9 billion to spend each year. By
1965, that number should hit $24 billion.
WLW television is eliminating the “Midwestern
Hayride” - one of the nation’s major country &
western jamboree type shows. It had been a
feature on the station and other Crosley-owned
stations in Dayton and Columbus for years.
Producers say the cost of talent has gone through the roof.
Johnny Horton returns to the Louisiana Hayride after a 45-day road trek.

Imperial and Chess, join into the “Flying Saucer” controversy, charging “unfair”
competition revolving around use of excerpts from several of their recordings in

the two Luniverse records - “Flying Saucer” and “Buchanan and Goodman on
Trial.” Also joining - artist Fats Domino and Smiley Lewis. The record “borrows”
parts of songs to answer questions.
The Commerce Department says the organ is fast overtaking the piano in
American manufacture of musical instruments.

National Disk Jockey Council for Public service are
taken by WMCA DJ

. The basic plan
involves co-operation by member jockeys in helping
teens in constructive projects and in helping
communities cut down on juvenile delinquency.
