Nikita Khrushchev declares before a cheering Indian audience, that Russia will
not beg for coexistence, but would fight for it.
The Atomic Energy Commission reports the Russians have set off their greatest
nuclear explosion to date. It is described as in the range of millions of tons of
TNT.
Prime Minister Nehru gives notice to his Russian guests
- Premier Bulganin and Communist Party Boss
Khrushchev not to expect their visit to swing India into the
Communist bloc. The country will stay neutral.
The government announces that a new typewriter
keyboard is being tested that “could revolutionize” the
present typewriter keyboard, unchanged in 83 years. The
basis is a “simplified keyboard” developed by August
Dvorak of the University of Washington, who claims it can
boost output of the average typist up to 35%. The principle
is to put letters used most frequently closest to the fingers which normally do the
most work. All vowels would be on the second or “home” of keys, for example.
In his first year of freedom, Alger Hiss says he can move about New York with no
problems. Not bad for a man who was perhaps the most publicized defendant of
his time, whose case profoundly unsettled a nation.

Dies - Shemp Howard , beloved third member of
“The Three Stooges.” Mr. Howard and a friend,
Robert Silverberg had attended the fights at the Los
Angeles Olympic Auditorium and were en route home
when the comedian was stricken with a heart attack.
He was 60. The trio recently celebrated their 40 th
year in show business. They just signed a new
contract with Columbia studios - their 23 rd annual
contract with the studio, for eight more shorts.
Brother Jerome (Curly) died in 1952.
Disneyland for the holidays - Walt Disney says his Disneyland is adding a
Mickey Mouse circus beginning with the Thanksgiving holidays. It will be the only
pink and white candy-striped circus tent in the world. The show, at 50-cent
admission, is fast-paced and will last about 75 minutes. Disneyland will be

decorated for the holiday season. A “Christmas Bowl,” adjacent to the Plaza, is
being designed for the use of church choral groups, youth orchestras and others
to present musical entertainment in the Christmas season tradition. Disney
believes by the end of the year, some 2 million would have visited the park,
spending at least $2 apiece.

Maria Callas flies to the safety of foreign soil leaving in
her wake, a tangle of process servers. She was served
after her finale Mme. Butterfly performance in Chicago.
She has two U.S. suits in the wings. She angrily shouted
to one of the servers - “Get your hands off me.” “I will not
be served. I have to voice of an angel. No man can serve
me. I will never sing in Chicago again.” She’s being by an
agent, who believe has money coming to him from the
diva.

Sunday nights - NBC says it will put up comedies to battle CBS-TV’s “Ed
Sullivan” after Colgate moves out of the spot on December 25.
Most popular TV show in Cuba -
“Casino de la Alegria” - music and
comedy with occasional guest singing
stars from the U.S. Most popular radio
station in Cuba - “The Radio Clock”
which gives time 24 hours a day. The
station is manned by 12 announcers who
work in two-man teams for four hours at
a stretch. It is a commercial station with
more sponsors waiting in line than
airtime.

Music news - Tennessee Ford’s hit single “16 Tons” is
having trouble in such places as Pittsburgh. Seems that
it’s a target of coal mining interests who don’t dig the
lyrics. Record stores in the area are reluctant to stock
the record.
Rock and Roll on the Ed Sullivan show - New York r&b DJ Tommy Smalls does
a segment this week which he emcees a package of top r&b acts including
Laverne Baker, Bo Diddley, the Five Keys and Willis Jackson.

In what is being called an experiment - Disney now has a label - Disneyland
Records. First package is a 45rpm Ep album featuring four tunes from Disney TV
shows titled “Player Piano Music” from the Wonderland Music Store in
Disneyland.
Radio news - Bing Crosby will be on hand (again) Christmas Eve on CBS Radio
with the 60-minute holiday special “Christmas Sing With Bing.”
Walt Disney is getting into radio with a daily broadcast on ABC radio from
11:35am to noon. Titled “Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom” it will broadcast from
Disneyland Park. Look for interviews with visitors and audience participation
features and games.
