L. Bruce Laingen
- the highest-ranking U.S. hostage held in
Iran, tells a Seattle radio station via phone from the Iranian
Foreign Ministry in Tehran, that he is “totally out of touch” with
the latest negotiations for the release of the hostages. He said he
knew Ronald Reagan had been elected President and then
wished both Reagan and Carter well.
The Voyager 1 spacecraft comes within 77,000 miles of Saturn
and takes photographs and a variety of measurements of the planet and its rings.
Although the Pioneer Probe was much closer to the planet last year, Voyager I
scanned the planet with much more sophisticated cameras and scientific
instruments.
The House passes and sends to President Carter, a historic Alaska lands
protection bill that will triple the size of the national parks system. Waiting to be
signed by the president, he said he was “pleased and gratified” by the passage of
the bill, which he called “the greatest land conservation legislation of the century.”
The Federal Reserve Board raises the interest rate charged to member banks
from 11% to 12% in a tough anti-inflation move.

In radio news - KSAN-FM (94.9) in San Francisco changes
its format from album rock to country this week. The station
was one of the pioneers of progressive rock in the mid-60’s.
Last week, former top-40 powerhouse KHJ, Los Angeles,
also went country. Formally known as “Boss Radio” in its
heyday, KHJ is now described as going from “Boss to Hoss.”
Due in stores this week - John Lennon’s “Double Fantasy.” Lennon and Yoko
Ono each wrote and sing on seven of the LP’s 14 songs. Lennon and Ono
numbers are alternated on both sides so they form a dialogue.

files a $10 million slander suit
against entertainer Chevy Chase over remarks he made
during an appearance on the “Tomorrow” show. The
suit says that Chase said (about Grant) - “I understand
he is a homo, what a goal and what a nice guy.” Grant
says the strong innuendo would damage his masculine
image in films and his business enterprises.

on the Prairie” turns 16 this
week. She has been with
the show since she was just 9. “I feel I have not
missed anything. I have a normal home life, get a
$10 allowance every week and have learned a great
deal.”
“Saturday Night Live” begins its sixth season this
week with an all new cast - Denny Dillon, Gilbert Gottfried, Gail Matthius, Joe
Piscopo, Ann Risley and Charles Rocket. Elliot Gould guest hosts with musical
guests Kid Creole and the Coconuts.
