President-elect Barack Obama urges Congress to pass an economic stimulus
package before he takes office. If they fail, he said he will make it “the first thing”
he gets done.
Bailout city - AIG’s bailout funds are now at $150 billion - adding pressure to
bailout industries such as the big automakers. Is the initial $700 billion enough?
A program aimed at mortgages owned or guaranteed by government-sponsored
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could help several hundred thousand borrowers
keep their homes.
President Bush says he regrets saying displaying the “Mission Accomplished”
sign as backdrop for a speech he gave six weeks after the March 2003 U.S.-led
invasion of Iraq.
President-elect Barack Obama resigns his Senate seat - effective Sunday of this
week. He called his four years in the Capitol “one of the highest honors and
privileges” of his life. Gov. Rod Blagojevich of Illinois will appoint Obama’s
replacement (oh - really?).
President-elect Barack Obama tells Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid he’s not
interested in seeing Democrats oust Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman from their
ranks over his endorsement of Republican John McCain. He said that expelling
Lieberman would hurt the message of bipartisanship and unity that he wants for
his new administration.

Shipper DHL says it will cut some 9.500 jobs nationwide and closing most of its
DHL express service centers.

Giants’ Tim Lincecum wins the National League Cy Young Award. He was 18-5
with a 2.62 earned-run average and a major league best 265 strikeouts.
Another NASCAR title Jimmie Johnson wins a record third consecutive Cup race-
this time - it was the NASCAR Sprint Cup title in Phoenix.
Technology -
Caving to pressure from the federal inaugural committee, EBay removes tickets
to the Jan. 20 searing-in ceremony of President-elect Barack Obama from its
websites. Tickets were listed from a low of $1,950 to a high of $7,500.
