In Vienna - U.S-Soviet talks to put superpower relations on track collapse with
each side blaming the other for the failure to unravel snarls over arms control that
tangled up the Reykjavik summit.
President Reagan signs into law, the most sweeping immigration reform in more
than 30 years. Millions of illegal aliens may become eligible to remain in the U.S.
legally under the act.

returns home for a warm welcome form
President Reagan and urged reporters
“in the name of god… back off’ from their
questions lest they endanger the loves of
other hostages. Jacobsen told the
President that during 17 months of
captivity, “I never lost hope of being a
free man again.”
Elections - The Democratic party seizes control of the senate for the first time in
six years despite a major campaign effort by President Reagan.
The Soviet media says that the Republicans Senate setback indicates, “The
Reagan era is on the wane” and blamed it on President Reagan’s foreign policy.
Federal prosecutors drop ammunition smuggling charges against Nancy
Reagan’s personal maid, saying statements from two other defendants showed
she was an unwitting participant.
Unemployment remains at 7%.
Alfa Romeo announces that it has accepted fiat’s takeover bid, rejecting a rival
offer from the Ford Motor Co.

The Chicago Bears activate quarterback Doug Flutie
as starter Jim McMahon will be out at least another
week. They may be without running back Walter
Payton who suffered a dislocated big toe this week.
Heavyweight boxing champ Larry Holmes says he’s
retiring - this time for good. At a news conference -
he said, “I’m tired of people using me. I’m tired of
fighting and I’m tired of not getting the decisions I
earned. I got too old.” The first retirement
announcement came in March of 1985.
